For a very different type of romance you could try Jocasta: The Mother-Wife of Oedipus by Grossack and Underwood. It doesn't end happily but Jocasta and Oedipus do care about each other.
Goodreads has an option to pick authors that other readers think are like your favorite. I have never read Collette Gale but when I looked her up this list appeared. Hope it helps :-)https://www.goodreads.com/author/simi...
Sometimes when I'm in a reading rut, I step outside of my preferred genre, almost like a palette cleanse, and it helps when I go back.
Should I read "The Bronze Horseman"??I'm not sure if I should... it sounds so interesting but I'm not convinced about it. Any recommendations for this book?

Maria, try "The Good Dream." I cannot remember the author. It is set in 1940's in the south. You may think you would not like it, but it is a sweet, touching human interest story. Very different - I, too, was in a reading rut -- too many who-dun-its. This story really touched me - a human interest story about a chld and a childless woman. Has some touching empathy and goodness . YOu should be able to find the author on B& N or Amazon.
Denise.....you asked if you should read The Bronze Horseman. I loved it because of different reasons. It's definitely a romance and it's a trilogy. I love it because it's a series. I want to know what happens to them after they got married....their happiness, struggles, their children, etc. Its also the struggles and persecutions of the Jewish population at that period of time. And then, I enjoy a lengthy book....all three books are quite long.I also HIGHLY recommend Jennifer Donnelly's The Tea Rose. It's also a love story and a trilogy. I LOVED loved loved it : )
Hope that helps

You see, I like romance books but I don't like ones set in current day, or even in the 20th century TBH. I have read and adored all books by Collete Gale, and just read Opera Ghost Unraveled and enjoyed it very much. I understand all these books are reimaginings of classic lit, but I don't think that is the only thing that appeals to me about them. I like the different times they are set in, but also that there was a story there first, before the romance was imagined.
So what I think I am looking for is a strong story with romance or erotica set in the past or in a plausible alternative history. I also love fantasy novels as well, so a fantasy romance would not be amiss either. I would be ever so grateful for any suggestions and thanks so much!
