What are you reading or what books have you read or heard about? (Part TWELVE) Ongoing general thread.
Uh oh. I just looked at my "To read list" and there are 87 books on the list. Guess this is something I'll have to update. I'll have some free time pretty soon.
Sometimes some books do stand the test of time. I wonder if I would feel that way about "Gone With the Wind," that I once thought was the best book I'd ever read.
I just finished Most Dangerous: Daniel Ellsberg and the Secret History of the Vietnam War & it was great. Really hit a chord what with the Middle East & Snowden issues. I gave it a 5 star review here:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I listened to Misty of Chincoteague for the first time, the first full reread in probably 40 years. I read parts of it to the kids at times, though. Still, it was nice to listen to the whole thing & it's a great book. I gave it a 4 star review here:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I,too, watched the film and tonight watched, "The Rare Breed" again and although I hadn't seen it for a while parts came back to me. Just enjoyment watching Jimmy Stewart and Maureen O'hara. I even enjoyed the cattle.
And forgot to say I did love that Misty movie. Didn't read the book but do imagine it was very good, too.
I don't know if I've ever seen the movie of Misty. Probably, but it's just not springing to mind. The books & then the real place were just too memorable for me.

Never head of "Misty" or "The Rare Breed" - added both to my list of "check these out!" Thanks guys. I won't be bored with an ever-growing list.
Linda wrote: "Never head of "Misty" or "The Rare Breed" - added both to my list of "check these out!" I'm really surprised about the first one. I thought everyone knew about it & read the series as a kid. It has ponies in it, after all.
;)
The Free Lunch by Spider Robinson was fun, light read. Very reminiscent of Heinlein's juveniles. It was well narrated by the author, too. I gave it a 4 star review here:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Uh oh. Sounds like I missed a good book as a kid. Ponies!

Hope someone saw and read my post from earlier today. I hope to visit Glens Falls this Fall. I'm wondering if anyone from there might be able to either show me around or help me plan my visit. You can reach me at jklodoc@gmail.com. Thanks. 8

The Whole Truth by David Baldacci
Having read two mysteries in a row, I am now back to SF/Fantasy..The Rainbow Abyss is by Barbara Hambly, one of my favorite authors. It is Book ! of The Sun-Cross series; sitting underneath it I have The Magicians of Night which is part 2. Just started but enjoying it so far!
I liked the few Hambly books I read, but it's been a long time. I had trouble getting her books in order. Not sure if I have them all yet or not. I should probably check since I think Marg likes her, too.

These 2 books sound interesting, Mary. Thanks for posting.
Started and finished Sidney Sheldon's "Are you afraid of the dark"Quick read. Suspenseful.
In many cases, the ending seems to come together or "not so together" quickly. Chapters are very short. The last 3 chapters I felt a little lost as the storytelling seemed rushed. I don't know how to explain properly. Other than that, good storytelling, quick read, interesting, page turner.
Sidney Sheldon was always a good story teller.Sydney Sheldon

Sidney Sheldon is also the creator of The Patty Duke Show, I Dream of Jeannie and Hart to Hart. Talented.
Downloaded from library to my Kindle and to my Fire - "Flying Too High" by Kerry Greenwood which is on tv as "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries" I'm on the wait list for the books Nina read - Chief Inspector Armand Gamache - book #1 is Still Life and book #2 is Fatal Grace. All on not available and I'm on the wait list.
Interesting comments about S. Sheldon and the Patty Duke show. it was good. And he was a great author.

Enjoy the read, Linda.
I ordered Miss Fisher to come to us on Netflix. Thanks for your recommendation. Still hot and humid in the nineties here but that's July in KS and MO..It's why we always went to WI in the summer when our children were young. Also, to visit relatives. And one lived only a couple of blocks from Lake Michigan and a grandmother had a lake cottage. Those were the days as the song went.
I'm enjoying the first series of Miss Fisher - book is pretty much like the tv series - which makes the reading easy.
Finished the book "Flying too High" only to find that this book was #2 in the series. Now reading "Cocaine Blues" which is #1. No biggie, after all I watched the series on PBS. Also reading "Churchill" by Paul Johnson. First 30 pages were good and of interest to me. Now I'm skimming (talking about the House of Commons, appointments and Tories). Became somewhat interested in Churchill from watching "The Crown" on Netflix.
I found the following book interesting: The Private Lives of Winston Churchill by John George PearsonMy review is at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Has anyone read Jodi Picoult's "Small Great Things" and if so what did you think of it? It is our book club selection this month. At first I wasn't going to finish it but then it did become a page turner.

Your review. Good review. Perhaps I should look into the audio versus reading. Instead of having the News channel on when doing billing and other things I can listen to a book.

Made a comment in Goodreads about her books to me are "challenging" - makes you wonder what path you would take.
I finished "The Rainbow Abyss" by Barbara Hambly.I immediately went on to the second book---" The Magicians of Night" which is the second part of the story---Book I ends on a cliffhanger so I am glad I had it ready.
The first book was very good; Book 2---thought excellent--is much darker in tone---almost chilling. Shouldfinish in the next day or two---this matched pair of books is an excellent fantasy read..
My book club members had a lively discussion of the book, "Small Great Things," this morning. All agreed we liked the book and some had reservations but overall one member thought the author was brave to write it. I won't say more until someone reads it.

Sometimes I get annoyed if a book ends on a cliffhanger - glad you had the 2nd book ready! Sounds like you are enjoying the books.
Book club for this month chose, "Jack 1939" and read the first 10 pages which I found good so far.Fact and fiction.
