Cee | 5 comments So…when I was 12 (25 years ago in 1989)…My English teacher read us a silly book about cats. It was about how cats are given ridiculous and silly names by their owners and how they are mortified by that. The cats themselves had regal and important sounding names...I don't recall the name of the book but I want to try and find it for my daughter. Does anyone possibly know the title?

Emily | 140 comments It rings a faint bell. Do you know if it was a picture book? Or possibly an excerpt from a longer book?

HeavyReader | 450 comments Maybe some children's version of a poem or poems from Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot?

HeavyReader's suggest would be my guess too, especially since there is one poem that talks about that specific thing. (And, btw, LOVE Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats.)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) I concur. TS Eliot for sure.

Also an episode of Stephen J. Cannell's 'Stingray'

Cee | 5 comments Thanks for the input guys, it's appreciated! I *think* it was a picture book, but this TS Eliot one/poem just doesn't ring a mental bell for me. Frustrating. :|

says that T.S. Eliot originally illustrated Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats himself. That original version was published in 1939. Could this be the version of the book you are looking for?

I haven't yet found an example of those illustrations, but I am still looking.

HeavyReader | 450 comments The Wikipedia entry for Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Poss...
has an image of a first edition cover, with Eliot's illustration. Also, there is a list of the contents of the book, along with names of featured cats. Maybe something in this entry could jog your memory or help you decide this is definitely not the book you are looking for.

HeavyReader | 450 comments Also, images from Google for Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats:

Some of these images look like maybe they are picture books.

HeavyReader | 450 comments Cee, did you get a chance to look at the images and see if any of the books shown are the one you are looking for?

Lou Rocama | 457 comments Old Possum's Book was also illustrated by Edward Gorey in some printings, and by at least one other person in earlier ones.

HeavyReader | 450 comments Cee, is it possibly this version Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats that you are looking for:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

It is a children's book with illustrations from a guy who has done drawings for many children's books.

Cee | 5 comments How do I now mark this query "solved?"

HeavyReader | 450 comments At the end of the title of the thread, there is a tiny "edit" hyperlink. By clicking on that link, you are taken to a page where you can change the folder to the proper solved folder. Also from that page, you are able to edit the title of the thread.

Please also add the book to the group's bookshelf and cut and paste the URL of this thread in the "Why This Book" box.

So glad I could help you in finding your book. Cheers!
