New people join the challenge throughout the year and it would be a lot of work to alphabetize and then maintain that list (I imagine)

I have to chime in and agree :) It sounds like a good idea, but it would be a nightmare to implement!

Not sure how much work is involved but have a look at lovelybooks- they have people joining throughout the year too... Scroll to the Teilnehmerliste (list of participants):

lovelybooks must have that function, which is handy - when Goodreads allows us to sort posts alphabetically, it can happen here too ... but something tells me that's not coming soon.

Sara Crumb wrote: "Can anyone tell me if Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia would be OK for the prompt a book about feminism?"

Crumb, yes that would be a good choice! I read the whole trilogy a couple years ago.

Claudia (claudiajill) I'm new and would like to know what LGBTQ means. Thanks.

LGBTQ+ = Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and more ( gender fluid, asexual, etc)

Charity | 10 comments Hope this is the right spot for this ... I see there are the monthly reading challenge discussions and there's one for January based on the first prompt of Nordic Noir. I'm not planning to do the prompts in order. If I read a Nordic noir book in March or June or something, is it still OK and appropriate to talk about it in the monthly challenge "I'm done!" thread?

Crumb | 395 comments Can anyone tell me if Quicksand by Malin Persson Giolito is nordic noir?

Thank you, Sara! I will definitely pick that for the feminist prompt.

Crumb | 395 comments What if you didn't participate in a past popsugar challenge? How can you do the prompt "choose your favorite prompt from a past popsugar challenge" ?

message 163: by Sara (new)

Sara Crumb, you can still view the previous challenges and pick a prompt you like regardless of whether you participated in the challenge before :)

message 164: by Mariel (new)

Mariel Is there an easy way to ind and edits our previous posts/comments? How do you locate your reading list besides using the search function. I noticed that there doesn't seem to be a way to edit from the "comments" section on my profile or from the search results. This means I have to scroll through the pages to find my comment and edit it. Am I missing something?

Goodreads functionality can be clunky at times, especially if you are trying to use the app. Pretty much, yes, if you want to edit a comment, you have to remember where your comment was and go back to it and click "edit," which you can not do from the app. Because Goodreads cannot seem to get their act together and make the app an actual functional part of Goodreads.

If there is a comment you plan to edit often (such as on the "Reading List" post where we go back and update the list as we make progress) you can: (a) remember which page your comment was on, go to that page and search for your name (this is what I used to do), or (b) while on the computer, go to your comment, click on the date/time displayed for your comment (in top right) and then bookmark that page that opens, that will bring you back to that exact comment. Or, and this is what I do today, (c) you can click on the date/time of your comment, copy that page address, and create a link to it on your Goodreads profile by using the html for a link: (I've added quotes and spaces so it will display here and not become a hyperlink, so this is a hot mess now): "open pointy bracket"a h r e f= the page address here in quotes >my link text "open pointy bracket"/a">"

Crumb wrote: "What if you didn't participate in a past popsugar challenge? How can you do the prompt "choose your favorite prompt from a past popsugar challenge" ?"

I see that one as a "wild card" category, because if you go through all three previous years, ANY book can fit into one of those categories.

Sure you can add comments later, but it may not get as much discussion since not as many people will be following that folder.

Sarah | 263 comments @Nadine and Crumb in regards to the past pop sugar challenges: I saw it as a wild card too and just thew in a book I wanted to read. I think I eventually did go back and find a prompt to fit it but yeah. It’s definitely a wildcard.

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1301 comments Can anyone explain the use of the word "prompt" as it´s used here?
I understand how it´s used I´m just a bit confused why (English is not my first language).

message 169: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments The prompts are each of the listed items in the challenge ex: “a book with your favourite colour in the title” is a prompt.
To prompt is to cause or bring about something so in this context it means that this is the item which causes you to read a specific book.
Hope that helps

message 170: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 9680 comments Mod
A lot of us tend to use "prompt" and "category" interchangeably when talking about the challenge. I don't know why, but I know I do it too! In this sense, prompt means "encouraging or inspiring" as in: "encouraging or inspiring you to read a certain type of book."

Yes! Non fiction is always ok (so long as the prompt doesn't specify fiction, of course! "Novel" is fiction.)

message 176: by TR (new)

TR So I thought of a question this morning. I apologize if it's already been asked and answered. Is shifting around of books okay? If you read book A in January and place it, even though it fills other slots then in June you read book B and the only spot it fills is the one you gave to book A, can you move it to something else it covers so that slot is free for book B or no?

I think so! It's your challenge - and lots of people read one book to tick off more than one prompt (so they read fewer than 50 books overall).

message 178: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1301 comments @TR, I'm doing that, so I'd say yes.

Absolutely you can shift your books around! I do it all year long as I readjust my list.

Remember, this is a personal challenge so you can do it however you want regardless of what we think ;)

Yes! I always keep in mind what other prompts the book can fulfill for shifting around purposes!

message 181: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments I do that a lot too, I like to keep track of all the prompts a book will fill so it’s easier later in the year.

Same! For every book I read, I maintain a matrix to tick off all the categories it could fill, so when I inevitably decide to shuffle things I can quickly see what can go where.

Katy wrote: "How do I edit my reading list?"

You have to be on a computer or using a browser like Safari on your phone, the "edit" feature is not available on the app. Because Goodreads needs to get their act together and improve their app.

On a computer, you'll see "reply | edit | delete | flag" on the bottom right of your post, just click on "edit" and the post will open in a window for you to edit.

Sarah (saranormal) | 3 comments I am finding it confusing that challenge discussions from 2016 and 2017 are still shown under the 2018 Challenge Prompts - Regular category.. I just spent half an hour looking through the discussion about books with an alliteration in the title before I realized that's not one of the prompts for 2018 lol. Is there anyway to filter so that I'm only looking at this year's challenge posts or do I just have to keep looking back at my paper copy to verify if it's a prompt?

message 186: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments Alliteration in the title is a 2018 prompt. They are all separate :)

message 187: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (saranormal) | 3 comments Tara wrote: "Alliteration in the title is a 2018 prompt. They are all separate :)"

I figured out the problem lol.. Apparently the only prompt not on the 2018 Book Challenge Bingo is that one, not the same as the Reading list lol. Thanks for making me take another look!

Tara Bates | 1008 comments Oh lol ok :) glad you figured it out!

message 189: by Emily (new)

Emily | 51 comments I just finished a book and it won't update with the new read date and add to the challenge for some reason. I have tried logging out and back in, deleting the book and re-adding, and even through an incognito window. Help, please :)

message 190: by Sara (new)

Sara Emily, I know this was an issue for many people last year. I thought they had fixed the glitch though.

Have you tried editing your review (in a browser) and manually setting the read date?

Yes, I tried via mobile, desktop, everything I could think of. I finally emailed them through the help page and it updated the challenge. It still looks like I have read the book 12 times right now (ha), but at least the challenge updated. thank you for your help though :)

message 192: by TR (new)

TR So, I need people's opinion on something. I'm reading a book and when I looked at the challenge, there are only 2 spaces it can go. The next book in a series or the 2015/16/17 Popsugar Challenge...aka the wild card. Both are really easy to fill and I hate to use either one of them this early in the year. But I don't want to read a book and not include it either, if I can help it. Thoughts? Opinions?

message 193: by Crumb (new)

Crumb | 395 comments I have a couple questions that I would really like to get an opinion on:

For the prompt: "a book with characters who are twins"
I just read All the Beautiful Lies by Peter Swanson , and there were a pair of twins in the book. They made up a big part of the story, but they weren't main characters. Can I use it for that prompt?

And, For the prompt, "a book that involves a book store or a library" the book All the Beautiful Lies by Peter Swanson , the father in it who passed away owned a rare a book store. It wasn't the main storyline, but it definitely was an important part. Could that be used for this prompt?

I would use it! You can always expand the challenge by doing your favorite prompts of 2015 and 2016 and 2017 to give you two more "wildcard" prompts.

At least fill it in for one of the prompts and if you need to shuffle things around later in the challenge you can do so. I just keep in mind all the challenges a book can fill for shuffling purposes!

I would use it for the twins category for sure!

I’ve done the same unintentionally - filled a lot of easy prompts already, including series and the past years wildcard - I even filled each previous year all in the same week. Oops.

I may just have to start picking more carefully earlier in the year. Last year I coasted through about three quarters of the year before having to make purposeful picks, this year that may come earlier.

Crumb | 395 comments Thanks, Megan!

message 198: by TR (new)

TR Thank you Megan. I forgot the previous challenges category was an "and" not an "or", so I even if I use one, I still have two left. I think I'll do that. Just need to be more careful of that happening again.

message 199: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michelle_greco) | 3 comments Hello! I just finished reading “The Whiskey Sea” by Ann Howard Creel. A good chunk of the book takes place at sea and on piers/docks, but there are scenes on land as well. Can I count this book toward the “book set at sea” category or does the whole book have to take place at sea? Thanks for your help!

message 200: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments I’d probably count it if I couldn’t find another place for it but keep note of where else it might fit and if I get a chance I might read something that fits better later.
I often tentatively place books in the category it fits I think will be the hardest to fill even if it isn’t perfect.
