I have a book with a red dust jacket but the book itself is black. Which cover/spine color counts?"

I would imagine you could use the spine of the dust jacket just fine. It's open to interpretation, honestly. Some people are using books that have only partially red spines, for example, and that is all fine and dandy, too.

Lily (joy1) | 61 comments I don't seem to be able to choose "None" insofar as following a discussion is concerned. I prefer to have to check, rather than receiving a long list of notifications. Is this possible, or has that been disallowed on this board?

message 53: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 734 comments You can turn off notifications for the whole group and then it won't send you notifications for any of the group discussions. If you click on the edit member settings on the main home page of the group, and scroll all the way to the bottom, you should see 'edit group discussion updates'. Click on that and then change the setting to 'none'. Hopefully that will work for you because this group has way too active discussions to get a notification every time!

Does a frame tale, such as Wuthering Heights count as a story within a story?

message 55: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments Yes according to Wikipedia, though that's far from definitive, I guess.

message 56: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks. Guess I was working too hard trying to find something more.

message 57: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (apollymipanthos) | 2 comments If you're joining this challenge late (now XD), can you apply books you've read thus far to the challenge or do you only start counting books you read from now on?

message 58: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments Yes, I think most people go back and see which books they've read in 2017 that would fit prompts when they start roster in the year.

Thanks, I realized after posting the question that it seemed kinda silly not to include previous books. Thanks again! (:

message 60: by Krissy (new)

Krissy | 16 comments I know there are no rules, but how you all feel about reread books for this years prompt? I drive over and hour to work, and on 2nd shift, sometimes I want something I know and love to keep me awake. so I always turn to Harry Potter, so I have reread the entire series this year. I have placed them off to the side of the category the fit to see if I can find another book in place of them.. but with it getting so close to end of year....

thoughts?

message 61: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments Personally I only count rereads if a) the prompt requires it or, b) it's a book club book. BUT in your case where you have prompts you could fill with them I would probably focus on finishing the empty prompts and then if I didn't get to another book to fill a HP prompt I'd count it.

message 62: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments I tend not to count comfort rereads - the ones where I know the story well and have reread often. But a reread of something I read twenty years ago I would totally count. At that point I generally can't remember much and the difference in my younger self and older self in terms of the life experience I bring to the read is so vastly different that I feel it's a totally new and different thing. Twenty years ago I had barely left my hometown, much less the continent. Now I've lived in four countries on three continents and travelled all over the place, usually solo and had two kids. These eyes arent the eyes that read books twenty years ago.

message 63: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments As a funny example, we were watching The Parent Trap last night with Haley Mills. I loved that movie well into my teens and early twenties. Now it's still amusing but the entire premise of the movie ruins it for me - you can't just split up your kids in a break up and never see the other one again. That's not a parenting possibility.

message 64: by poshpenny (new)

poshpenny | 1916 comments I really dislike rereading in general most of the time and only do it when the prompt forces me too. But seriously, if you read a book this year, then you read the book this year and it counts if you want it to count. I count picture books and short books and easy books, if that's what I read. If I read a novel that fills the prompt later, I can always change it if I feel like it. Or not. Because ALL THE KINDS OF BOOKS COUNT! Books is books.

message 65: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments Posh penny I misread that as "I dislike reading most of the time" and was like why are you doing this?! Lol I need to go to sleep clearly :)

message 67: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Ok. This is a really annoying. Can you all tell me how to copy and paste these lists on to my reading list? I’m on an iPad and can copy only a word at a time. I know it must be simple, but I’m just not getting it!

message 68: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments When you highlight there will be a little blue line on either end of the highlight. You move that with your finger to highlight the area you want to copy

message 69: by Ally (new)

Ally (allystacks) | 11 comments So, for the past two challenges I've slotted some books into multiple prompts! But I'm going to go in for a proper challenge in 2018 and match one book per prompt :)

message 70: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Thank You! I knew it would be simple. I’m used to just dragging the highlight, which didn’t work. Yes, I’m in.

Chrissy | 387 comments I was hoping to start reading Sourdough this week, but the November group read thread doesn't exist yet. Just wondering, I don't mean to nag!

message 72: by Taiwo (new)

Taiwo | A Lifestyle Nerd (alifestylenerd) Hello. I wanted to ask. Do we start the 2018 challenge in 2018? Like, next year? Or can we start this year?

message 73: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments Some people count all books finished in 2018, some have to start and finish in the year. It's up to you but the vast majority do only books they read in the year.

message 74: by Isabell (new)

Isabell | 27 comments Something technical... I'm wondering how to link authors and books like the blue texts in your posts. How does this work?

message 75: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments Isabel I can't help you do it but I can tell you you have to be in the browser version, the app cannot link books. So if you're on a phone or iPad mobile version then you need to go to the browser.

message 76: by Isabell (last edited Nov 05, 2017 09:50AM) (new)

Isabell | 27 comments thank you :) that did the trick I was indeed using a phone

message 78: by Deb (last edited Nov 06, 2017 03:48AM) (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader So, basic question from someone who had never heard of popsugar this time last week: It seems that the challenge has a list of categories/prompts, the person chooses the categories WITHOUT actually choosing books to fill the category?

Then, as you read through the year you fit your reading to fill the categories - have I got it right? Because in the 2018 challenge lists it just seems everyone has pasted the same list with no books attached....

It seems anyone can suggest a category/prompt?
Do you have to have a minimum number from the list?

So, it is kind of like a reading treasure hunt as you find books to fit the list?

message 79: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments We don't choose the prompts we use all of them, that list informs our reading and as we go through the year we fill in the book we read for each prompt.

message 80: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments And yes it's like a scavenger hunt to fill each prompt :)

message 81: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader Aha, so to finish the challenge all the 'prompts' are filled... but not pre-selected? You can just find them along the way?

message 82: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments You can pre select which books you will read for each prompt; that's an individual preference. Some people like to plan it out. Personally I like to leave it open so that I can read what I feel like and see whether it fits a prompt. The challenge is individual so you kind of do what you want :)

The group discussion thread is open now. Sorry for the delay!

Sandra Lourenço (ssandraa) | 128 comments I'm going to do the challenge in 2018 for the first time (yay!) and I have a question: are graphic novels allowed?

message 85: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments Absolutely Sandra! Last year someone tried to do the whole challenge with graphic novels

Vidur Sharma | 2 comments Helloo...

looking for recommendations in European history and its culture. Something which is easy to read, fun and touches deeply into Europe Culture and its history.

Please help !!

message 87: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments Hey! Check out the threads about a micro history and book related to your ancestry, there may already be some ideas there for you :)

Debbie Phillips (debbie_phillips) Kirsten wrote: "Hmm... yes I agree... but my interpretation is that if there are 40 prompts you should be reading 40 books. IMHO."

I read more than the 52 books for 2017, or will by the time I am done. I counted some books for more than one prompt so that I could read books that did not fit any categories. This is a laid back group and you can interpret the prompts how you want to and count each book once, twice, three times or more.

The official rules say... "First and most important rule: this group is for fun! Remember that while friendly competition is perfectly acceptable, some people may not read as quickly or are too busy to read as much as others. If you only read one book all year but it fits one of our categories then you are as welcome as someone who reads all 40. Please be respectful, don't be afraid to ask questions and remember: the more you participate the better the group will be! "

message 89: by Rohit (new)

Rohit Sharma Hey Guys,
I just joined.
When do we start the 2018 challenge?
WIll that be a separate group or it will be right here in this group to take up the challenge?

message 90: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments It will be the same group. Some of the folders are for previous years and others are for planning for 2018.

message 91: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Why is this group not in the Goodreads community? I found it indirectly from a Google search. If you type in Ultimate PopSugar reading challenge you get another group that is not very active. It is a little confusing.

message 92: by Sara (new)

Sara I'm not sure, Cindy. I wasn't around when the group was first set up. I will look into it.

Sara Cindy wrote: "Why is this group not in the Goodreads community? I found it indirectly from a Google search. If you type in Ultimate PopSugar reading challenge you get another group that is not very active. It is..."

Hey Cindy, I'm not sure why you weren't able to find the group in the community. I just did a quick search in the community/groups section and this group popped right up. Maybe it's because I'm a member already, but it was prominent at the top of the list. There were several other similar groups listed as well, but there was no trouble finding the big one with all the members :)

You can PM me if you have any other questions.

message 94: by Deb (last edited Dec 10, 2017 03:43AM) (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader The year I graduated from high school? I really do think that is a bit of an 'off' category. Is it that only graduates are allowed to join the challenge or something?

Well, I flunked high school completely and utterly. Shall I read a book from the year the rest of my class graduated? Or from the year I finished one of my university degrees?

What say you moderators?

message 95: by Sara (new)

Sara Deborah, it is entirely up to you how you choose to interpret it. Maybe choose a book published while you were in high school? Or certainly you can handle it one of the ways you suggested. It's your call! Sorry that this prompt is a tough fit for you. It happens from time to time, but don't let it derail your challenge! :)

message 96: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 734 comments Deborah what about from the year you turned 18 or another milestone year for you? I don't think the creators of the list were trying to be exclusive; they probably just plain didn't think about the fact that not everyone has graduated high school.

message 97: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader Yeah, thanks Sara and Jackie. I was getting a bit on my high horse there I guess.

Well, I will come up with something, I am sure. I'll just pop it in brackets in the challenge. :)

Good luck! I like seeing everyone's "adaptations" to make the prompts work for them. It's like last/this year with the "bought on a trip" prompt. If you don't travel you had to get a little creative. I personally borrowed a book from the library on my phone while stuck at the auto shop. It was a "trip" that lasted several hours and I needed a book, so I counted it.

Tanathebookworm_ | 8 comments Hello! This is my first year going the Popsugar challenge. I have done reading challenges the past two years so I am familiar with them! I was wondering if anyone has already started putting together lists of books ideas for each prompt? I wanted to get a head start so any help is appreciated :)
