Alissa | 220 comments I liked Blackguards very much! Finished it fairly quickly, too, which was a first with an anthology. Happy reading :)

message 52: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I finished The Death of Dulgath. Another great Royce and Hadrian tale. Loved it. It's probably my favorite of the Chronicles.

Now I'm starting A Dance with Dragons and soon I'll be waiting with everyone else for the next book :P

You're all naming books that are on my list! Starting The Crippled God, then the final Drenaii which I was planning to read back in December but didn't get to it!

Then I'll be reading Empire in Black and Gold and Dragons Blood. Oh, and Infidel: Bel Dame Apocrypha.

message 54: by JuJu (new)

JuJu I just read the first 3 books of the 'Das Geheimnis von Askir' Series by Richard Schwartz . As far as I can see they are only translated into Dutch and Italian and are originally German. If you can read one of those languages I'd really recommend those (:
the first one's called Das Erste Horn .

I'm also half way through Blood Song by Anthony Ryan .

message 55: by Amy (new)

Amy Sanderson | 129 comments I'm about halfway through The Masked City. I hugely enjoyed the first book in the series and this one is just as much fun. It doesn't seem to have as many good reviews as the first book, but at the moment I can't see why!

I'm partway into the second story (Bradley P. Beaulieu) and really thinking I need to put his novels into my queue.

I liked the side stories. "Backup" is from Thomas' POV; it's in the anthology Side Jobs

I've just bought one of his that was nominated last month, it was cheap on kindle. I'll look forward to it.

Thanks Illusode. I've not read this and I really like Thomas. I'll see if I can find it.

message 61: by Ben (new)

Ben Tosh I'll be finishing Last Argument of Kings tonight (only about 100 pages left).

Once I'm done with that, I'll be starting Legend.

Me too! I already have The Winds of Khalakovo on my kindle. I liked the author's story in the anthology and I'm curious to read more set in that world.
Currently reading A Thousand Nights, because I've recently finished -and liked- The Wrath and the Dawn, a fast-paced YA story with the 1001 nights theme.
The two are very different, I'm not even sure I would call the second a YA. Anyway, I cannot put it down!

Well, if it's that world in particular that you're interested in, I think the Blackguards story is tied to his new Twelve Kings in Sharakhai, not to the earlier trilogy. But myself, I plan to read 'em all sooner or later ...

message 65: by Alissa (new)

Alissa | 220 comments Oh! Thanks for pointing it out! I need to add the book on my TBR then :):):)

Finished Steelheart Rated it a 4. It really was a 3.5 but it didn't deserve to be a 3. I have to admit. I don't care for super hero books. So with this in mind I went into this book with a negative, guarded viewpoint. But, it is Brandon Sanderson. With this in mind it turned out to be a really good read. It sucked me in and I was engrossed. Loved the characters and loved the plot. But, and I mean it was a really big but. The ending sucked. It really wasn't an ending. It was more like an end to a chapter and should have kept going. With this in mind it kind of pissed me off and made me not want to not read the next book. Enough said. Started Uprooted

I bought the Winds one. Should I read something of his before that?

message 68: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Winds is his first novel; I think it'll be a fine starting place.

Excellent. now I just need time. I'm on my last Malazan, which is brilliant but time consuming.

message 70: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Someday I will go back to Malazan. I read the first five back in ... 2005? Something like that ... when in order to read past Deadhouse Gates I had to order the British paperbacks of 3-5, but I haven't gone on in the series, and at this point I'd have to go back and start over in book one.

Malazan is high up my list of series I want to read, but I'll admit the length of the whole thing daunts me a bit! I'm also not sure whether I can commit to more than one series at once. Ah, if only I was a faster reader!

message 73: by Robert (new)

Robert Miller I just started the Harry Potter series. Loving it so far. 4 days in and halfway through book 2! It's flying by.

message 74: by Ben (new)

Ben Tosh Started my 6th book of the year yesterday when I opened up The Light Fantastic. I'm already about halfway through it. Can't believe I never tried the Discworld books before...

Plus they seem to take longer to read too. So say, you could read 30 pages in bed, you'll probably manage 20!

1-5 are mostly under 1000 pages, you can whizz through them ;)

They are heavy, time consuming, heavy unless on a kindle, but totally amazing.

Have you read Bauchelain and Korbal Broach? Much shorter and lighter, but equally amazing.

message 78: by Mili (new)

Mili (miliness) Reading HP 4. Enjoying the serie so far =) read them way back at a young age and havent read from book 4 so it was about time!

Finished The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. Deff recommend it, fun read =)

Finally finished Deadhouse Gates, was a blast but also had its long dragging parts.

Im thinking of reading The Pillars of the Earth. Friend gave me the book months ago, I tried to decline it in a friendly manner but I should give it back some time soon haha~

message 79: by Margret (new)

Margret Just finished Fall of Kings (Troy #3) by David Gemmell. It was amazing, now I'm totally motivated to read the Drenai saga .... After I conquer the Wheel of Time (starting book #10 soon :s). I also have plans to start Curse of the Mistwraith soon, and may start Gardens of the Moon early in time for March's read.

If anyone is interested in doing a series read of Malazan with me, perhaps a Bi-Monthly commitment? I can set up a BR thread

I'm on the tail end of the last Malazan, so I won't be reading, sorry. I might add a comment if I remember a specific book - they tend to merge.

Layla ✷ Praise the sun ✷ So far I have read
Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1) by Veronica Rossi Through the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky, #2) by Veronica Rossi Into the Still Blue (Under the Never Sky, #3) by Veronica Rossi Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling The Moonlight Sonata by Yiannis Ritsos Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, #1) by Pierce Brown The Alloy of Law (Mistborn, #4) by Brandon Sanderson Shadows of Self (Mistborn, #5) by Brandon Sanderson

message 82: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Blackguards: Tales of Assassins, Mercenaries, and Rogues and am going way into the past with H. Rider Haggard's Jess. (Part of my probably never-to-be-completed project to read all of Haggard's novels in more-or-less order of publication.)

message 83: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) Currently reading City of Blades by Robert Jackson Bennett. Loved the first and this one is just as good.

Plan to start Sanderson's Bands of Mourning next to be followed by The Eye of the World

On the subject of dauntingly long books, I've had a copy of Pillars of the Earth on my shelf for about three years and I still haven't read it!

message 86: by Srihari (new)

Srihari Vijayakumar Started Deadhouse gates in Malazan series ,entirely different set of characters from Gardens of the Moon. So, put it on hold and started Wiseman's Fear.

message 88: by meleah (last edited Jan 28, 2016 02:18PM) (new)

meleah (meleahreads) Currently reading The Bands of Mourning. It's excellent so far.

message 89: by Lynda (new)

Lynda This month, the only fantasy I'm reading is the His Dark Materials audio books, I'm nearly done with The Subtle Knife. The audios are a dramatic reading, which I'm really enjoying, despite the tinny quality of the recording.

message 90: by Lea (last edited Jan 29, 2016 09:13PM) (new)

Lea I'm reading A Crucible Of Souls. I really like it so far! Sorry don't know how to do the link thing...

City of Blades is high on my list, when I first read City of Stairs I liked it so much I wished for more set in the same world, and I got my wish :)
I'm currently reading the last book of the excellent The Shattered Sigil trilogy, The Labyrinth of Flame, and I really hope the ending will be up to the rest of the story -awesome so far!-. I just love it when a book is character-driven and a lot of effort goes into action and plot, too. Such balance makes for impressive entertainment indeed.

message 93: by Frank (new)

Frank Dorrian (grimfranky) | 15 comments currently reading Book 2 of the Wheel of Time, The Great Hunt. Gotta say, really really, REALLY ain't impressed. Its series-completion OCD thats keeping me going through this one and will most likely be what has me read the rest too, Robert Jordan just ain't what I'd call a good writer, at least not where characters and dialogue are concerned.

message 94: by Margret (new)

Margret Uh oh.. The Great Hunt and The Shadow Rising were my favorites of the WoT..

Wait till you reach Lord of chaos :P

message 96: by Lynda (new)

Lynda I feel like I need to re-read the Wheel of Time series, though I'm sure I haven't read all of the books, but I know I've read at least the first three, and sadly, can't remember much about it. I do get it confused with the Memory, Sorrow, and Throne trilogy a little bit, because I read them around the same time. I think I read them in between semesters at college, which is further back in time then I care to admit. Though, To Green Angel Tower I only read a few years ago, so it's more firm in my memory.

When you are in the comment box, click add book/author which will reveal a drop down box. Type in your title, hopefully it'll be near the top.

Still reading Uprooted and am really enjoying it. However, I also started Scepter of Faith by Chris Smith. It's not for everyone because it does have a lot of talk about faith and God but it is in no way "preachy". I'm really enjoying this one also.

message 99: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) Finished City of Blades and The Bands of Mourning. Both were really good in different ways.

Now reading Mistborn: Secret History as I couldn't wait to jump right into it after TBOM.

Plan to start The Eye of the World soon :D
