Big Chapter. Big Battle. Small summary by comparison

So Tool and his Imass join up with the Malazans. Olar Ethil in remaking an undead Tool also reinstated his loyalty to the Emperor ie Shadowthrone and by extension the Malazans. He puts himself under Gesler's command.

The Fourteen stand up Jaghut join the battle

The Perish heirarchy end up killing each other and possibly one of the wolves of winter in the process. I think Setoc was in the process of going soletaken when she was killed. The Perish switch sides

Brys Beddict kills one of the Pures by pouring out all the names of the forgotten gods he had sought out - one of which included the FA god they had killed in the wasteland.

Stormy and Gesler somehow summon Fener by accident just as Karsa kills him in Darujistan. The blood raining down turns the undead Imass back into living Imass - right before they are about to get killed.

The undead brisgeburners join the fight

Sinn goes nuclear and carves a way to the spire where she intends to take the CG heart for herself. Stormy kills her, also killing himself. Gesler reaches the Spire and Reverence and she kills him. Hood walks up the Spire and kills reverence and the Shigal Assassins flies off with the Crippled gods heart.

Tool is reunited with his family and Toc also delivers Hetan to him healed.

Duffy Pratt | 354 comments I loved this chapter, but it left me with a nagging doubt. I'd like to be sure that what Stormy and Gesler did was not only noble, but necessary. But I have no way to judge Hood's power, so I'm left wondering whether he would have been able to handle Sinn and Reverence on his own.

And another question: how many different varieties of killing a god are there? Draconus killed a couple of elder gods, and there was no cataclysmic reaction. Hood died in RG, but apparently that didn't really count. Now one of the wolves may have been killed, and again, not such a big deal if it happenned. But Fener is killed and it's an unbelievably major event.

Johny (drbo) | 184 comments Battle of all battles.

Mael destroys Perish ships in gulf near the Needle.

Lederian army with Grub (who with his magic scares Faint and Precious Thumble), three hundred Teblor, Evertine legion and Gilks will attack forty thousand Shriven army holding narrow road to the Kolanse.

With Shriven there are also Perish with Setok and Tanakalian holding middle of enemy line and Krughava will try to have their loaylity back.

Setok stops with wolf howling brother Diligence, who wanted to punish and enslave Tanakalian. Krughava tells Setok humans are better at hunting and killing wolves, and wolf gods can't hunt here. Wolves of winter are pissed and try to possess and change Setok to kill Krughava, but Tanakalian kills Setok and probably one of wolves in the middle of changing. He believes he saved wolves, because if they come here through Setok, FA will destroy or enslave them. Then he attacks Krughava and they kill each other.

Perish army joins Lederian/Bolkando attack to FA and moves at expected position of Shriven reinforcement for Needle army.

‘We’re not here to win,’ Aranict replied. ‘We’re just here to take a long time to die.’

Gesler and Stormy meets Onos T'oolan with eight thousand and seven hundred T'lan Imass, who wants to fight at Malazan side. Che'malle army with Imass army and Sinn will attack Shriven army guarding access to the Needle.

Brother Diligence attacks Brys, but he releases all names of the forgotten gods and finally name of FA god. But it's killing Brys in the process. And Aranikt too, because she is linked to Brys. Faint offers Mael her blood to help save Brys and Aranikt. But all them are saved by Amby Bole.

Gilks, Perish and Teblors fails to stop Shriven reinforcements and falls back.

Che'malle and Imass armies are advancing.

Gulf of Kolanse is freezing and ice is growing to the base of the Needle. Hood is finally in game.

Never before had Gesler been so close to the ancient undead warriors in the midst
of battle, witness to this devastating … implacability.
And the Emperor had almost twenty thousand of them at his command. He could have conquered the
world. He could have delivered such slaughter as to break every kingdom, every empire in his path.
But he barely used them at all.
Kellanved – is it possible? Did evenyouquail at the carnage these creatures promised? Did you see for
yourself how victory could destroy you, destroy the entire Malazan Empire?
Gods below, I think you did.
You took command of the T’lan Imass – to keep them off the field of battle, to keep them out of human
wars.
And now I see why.

Gesler and Stormy fights with rage and invoks, probably unconsciously, god of war Fener. And he shows himself in the sky over the Needle.

Karsa Orlong in Darudhjistan walks to the temple of Fener and destroy his tusk and altar, killing Fener in progress.

Blood of the dying god is raining in Kolanse from the sky.

T'lan Imass, who were sent to delay Shriven reinforcements are returned to the mortal life. Literally in the worst possible moment.

But army of fourteen Jaghut appears and helps now mortal Imass in battle.

Teblor army came running and joins this fight.

Go well on your way, Hood. And the next face you see, well, why not just bite it off?

Dead Bridgeburners came and also joins the battle.

Torrent sent Tool's children away, Olar Ethil is also mortal now, Torrent is wounded, but before he dies, he kills Olar Ethil.

Gesler and Stormy watch Sinn burning enemy soldiers on the way to Needle and hurry to stop her before she takes Cripple God's heart for herself.

Hood is also mortal now and has problems with journey on now damaged ice pillar. Two dogs, Bent and Roach hurry to the Needle too and Roach manages to bite Hood in the leg.

Sinn burns Stormy, but he manages to jump with her from the cliff and kills them both.

Gesler climbs on the top of Needle and finds sister Reverence. Bent helps him in the fight, but sister Reverence kills Gesler and prepares to kill Bent. Before that, Hood climbs on the Needle too and kills Reverence. Shi'gal assasin also arrives and take Crippled god's heart.

Onos T'oolan is reunited with his children and also with his wife, Hetan, who was bringed back to life by Toc the Younger I think.

Battle is over, but where are the Bonehunters?

Excellent summary Johny :)

Linette | 152 comments Epic chapter, too much to know where to start for me.

Loved that the dogs were part of it, nothing stops the cattledog and the yappy rat.

Thank you for explaining how Hetan showed up for Tool, I couldn't figure that out.

Also surprised how Grub went from being a child to suddenly being a young man in one chapter.

Where are the Bonehunters, indeed?

Good question about the impact of gods dying Duffy. Maybe the answer lies in the how they died rather than the who. Plus Fener was already exiled from his realm.

Maybe that coupled with him being summoned (by near ascendants) plus his blood getting everywhere.

In those other instances nothing of the sort occurs. Certainly no one gets covered in a dying god's blood.

It does seem a significant increase in effect though. I'm not sure any of those factors are sufficient to explain the difference.

Lori I don't get that either, plus he was mortal so you'd think he wouldn't have such a massive effect.

It seems Olan invoked the ritual for unresolved love for Oonas1

There is I believe an explanation of sorts to the uber effect of Fener's death in the next chapter - but I haven't finished that yet so I'm not telling.

Maybe here (view spoiler)

Gesler and stormy dying in the battle was really sad they were with us from Deadhouse gates. Also bent and roach try hard to save Gesler but in vain.

Why did karsa kill fener off?.

Also i think setoc was not going soletaken but I think the wolves were going to tear her apart and come into this realm to kill krughava.

Krughava is basically a mystery to me because she seems to be a stubborn supporter of wolves but in instant turns and explains futility of wolves plan.

Olar ethil was just some side character to me she did not influence the story s much as was expected from her.

Johny (drbo) | 184 comments Sumant wrote: "Why did karsa kill fener off?."

Because he promised it to the CG I think. And because Fener was sort of homeless and abandoned.

Sumant wrote: "Also i think setoc was not going soletaken but I think the wolves were going to tear her apart and come into this realm to kill krughava."

Yes, but to come in this realm they need to possess her, sort of soletaken.

Duffy Pratt | 354 comments In Toll the Hounds, Picker told Karsa that Hood would need Karsa to kill a god. This reminder was bound up with a vow that Karsa has earlier made, and which I do not remember precisely. Of course, Karsa has shed many of his vows, so there still remains the question of why he fulfilled this one.

I don't think Karsa was doing it as a favor to the Crippled God. The last we know of their contact, the CG was trying to get Karsa to take up Rhulad's sword, and Karsa was having nothing to do with it or with him.

Johny (drbo) | 184 comments But then Karsa was merciful to some dying cripple, I forgot his name, and told something to CG before cripple died, right?
