Xiomy's Book Tales (xiomysbooktales) | 8 comments After a rocky start with this book I have yo admit that it left me wanting more. After I finally was able to connect with the book and characters I couldn't stop reading, I was immersed with this book. Want to start Scarlet but am holding the temptation. My heart still goes with Peony and with Iko. I had a feeling about the plot twist glad I was right. My most hated are Queen Levana, Adri, and Pearl, ugh! But I loved Price Kai and Dr. Erland.

Thanks!

Emily | 11 comments Finished earlier today!!! Can't wait to talk about it more! Absolutely loved it!

Asma (oasisgirlmd) | 38 comments Mod
I got very excited when I heard this was a retelling of Cinderella. I got very confused when I read the words "cyborg" and "androids". honestly, my enthusiasm kinda plummeted when I realized it has robots and cyborgs in it. I'm not at all into science fiction , robots, etc. what surprised me the most was despite all that, I enjoyed the book quite a bit.

message 61: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm like you, so not into robots and stuff, but I LOVED this book - the cyborg stuff is only one aspect and a metaphore for so much more

message 62: by Marie (new)

Marie (marielee1982) | 42 comments I was apprehensive too when I realised cinder was a cyborg but I'm glad I gave it a chance cos I definitely enjoyed it way more than I thought I would!

Asma (oasisgirlmd) | 38 comments Mod
and that's what great about it. you never think a book inspired by a fairytale would have a cyborg as the heroine!! it would either be a complete disaster or a brilliant idea. think it was the latter in this case. I still need to recover from my Harry Potter hangover though. I think would've enjoyed this book way more if I hadn't just finished Harry Potter!!

message 64: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8 comments I just finished last night, and I can tell this is going to be one of my favorite series! Can't wait to get to the rest.

message 65: by Marie (new)

Marie (marielee1982) | 42 comments I know Jenny me either but I'm being good and holding off on scarlet for a bit!

message 66: by Emily (new)

Emily | 11 comments Felt the same Asma about the whole idea of cyborgs! I like some science fiction books, but I was pretty apprehensive before I started this book! I couldn't have been more wrong and I'm sorry I judged :P

I know right!! And who can blame us! We're so used to Victorian classics, cyborgs is a 180 turn for us!!

message 68: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8 comments Marie, I'm only waiting until February. I think I'll read one a month until I'm finished. :)

steph (stephpgs) | 13 comments I'm still reading it! Hope to finish this evening, or tomorrow. Has everyone been enjoying it? So far it's just an OK read for me... :S (also, hi everyone! Sorry to join the party late, haha!)

Hi Steph!
Yeah the book didn't live upto the hype for me either. But considering cyborgs and androids, I thought it was good. I'd probably give it 3/5 stars.

message 71: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (asongofpagesandwords) | 20 comments I agree with Asma and Stephanie, I enjoyed the book a lot but it wasn't mind glowingly amazing - of the books in the series I think Cress has been my favourite so far and I enjoyed it a lot more than I did Cinder or Scarlet. Not to say I didn't enjoy them but they weren't amazing amazing in my mind

message 72: by steph (new)

steph (stephpgs) | 13 comments I see, Asma! And that's good that you preferred the other books, Sarah. :D I didn't actually manage to read any more of it yesterday because I was working, but hopefully today I will finish it...!

message 73: by Alex (new)

Alex (alexmak) | 2 comments I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who isn't exactly raving about Cinder. I don't want to give anything away, but there doesn't seem to be any sort of substance to the world or the characters - they just seem to be thrown together mechanically (heh - see what I did there?) with little to no chemistry between them. Also, I'm pretty sure this book would fail the Bechdel test. I have about 50 pages to go, so we'll see if a last-minute miracle is able to resuscitate my feelings of apathy.

message 74: by Marie (new)

Marie (marielee1982) | 42 comments I think the groundwork for the characters was really well done and I'm excited to see how they progress and develop in the next book

message 75: by steph (new)

steph (stephpgs) | 13 comments I didn't hate the book, so I'm still interested to see what the next books are like, especially as Sarah said she prefers them!

Asma (oasisgirlmd) | 38 comments Mod
I second Steph. I didn't hate it and would love to see what happens and how the story develops.

message 77: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (bookschief_managed) So, for how many of you is this a first time read?

message 78: by [deleted user] (new)

Was my first time I read it

Asma (oasisgirlmd) | 38 comments Mod
first time for me too

message 80: by Marie (new)

Marie (marielee1982) | 42 comments it was my first time too. I'm not a huge fan of dystopian style books, I kinda have to spread them out or I'll lose interest but I really liked cinder. What did everyone like and dislike about it?

message 81: by steph (new)

steph (stephpgs) | 13 comments It was my first time reading it too! I disliked the world-building and felt pretty neutral about most of the characters, but I liked that it was a fast-paced read. :)

Sarah (knightofstories) (knightofstories11) | 18 comments full discussion open!!!!

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

What do we think of Kai and his advisor?

Sarah (knightofstories) (knightofstories11) | 18 comments I'd like to talk about Dr Erland. I mean:he knew all along . He must have been done with all the blood tests by the end of the first third of the book. He knew who Cinder really was by then. The reason he didn't tell her until the end : plot. you do not tell the heroine that she's the lost princess in the middle of the book. It has to be the final revelation. Booooom! Shock the reader in the end. But I think that he had time to tell kai.i mean he probably thought Kai was looking for the young princess. so why didn't he tell Kai? plot-wise: there has to be an emotional cliffhanger in the end...kai finding out who she is...A cyborg and a lunar. him not knowing that she's the princess. This makes us want to read the second book. so that's one reason for Erland not telling Kai. reasons in the story? maybe Erland was afraid the Queen would see him . He's a Lunar after all.then arrest him. If he had a bigger plan for Cinder (obviously ) to defeat Levana in the end,his arrest would have destroyed said plan. I still wish he would have told Kai!!!!!!!!!

can we all agree that Erland seems to be on another level of knowledge and planing? there's probably a lot more he hasn't told us yet. what's up with Africa?
All in all:Erland knew stuff .All along.i find that intriguing.

message 85: by [deleted user] (new)

You're right about Erland: I already said it to one of you in DM, I very much hope he's coming with us to Africa in the second book

Sarah (knightofstories) (knightofstories11) | 18 comments and I liked Kai. so much burden on him ....he's doing the best he can. I first thought Torin might have his own agenda. but just at the beginning. ...he's probably just a concerned advisor

message 87: by Sam (new)

Sam Falston (samfalston) | 14 comments First time read for me :)
I agree with you guys, I enjoyed the book as well, I liked it but I didn't love it. There were so many cool concepts but the execution and depth wasn't great. Nevertheless I am still really looking forward to reading Scarlet.

message 88: by Sam (new)

Sam Falston (samfalston) | 14 comments Sarah you make a really good point about Dr Erland - why didn't he tell Kai that Cinder was the princess? What other reason could he have had (besides plot) to wait so long to tell her who she was?

message 89: by Sam (new)

Sam Falston (samfalston) | 14 comments I also liked Kai as a character - he is kind, brave and puts his people first. The fact that he was willing to put aside his happiness to protect his people from the disease really endeared me to his character. And I like how his love for Cinder isn't just instant.

Vy (thelibrocubicularist) (thelibrocubicularistig) | 10 comments What I liked most about it - very fast-paced, original setting, and it's perfect for when I don't want to spend a lot of time getting into a book. I read it in 2 days, which is pretty good considering my busy schedule.

I agree with Steph that I was pretty neutral about many of the characters - sometimes the dialogue felt a bit scripted (?) and obvious, and they didn't have as much depth and personality as I like.

There were some other flaws as well that bothered me when I was reading, but I can't remember them. I think I read "alliance of six kingdoms" somewhere, but if I did that couldn't be right seeing as some of the countries in the alliance aren't monarchies?

While it wasn't in any way a great book, it was an entertaining one. I've finished Scarlet and look forward to Cress, since people say they like that one more. I'd rate Cinder 3/5.

message 91: by Marie (new)

Marie (marielee1982) | 42 comments I hope they bring back iko, I liked her. I also hope someone kicks adris ass!

Sarah (knightofstories) (knightofstories11) | 18 comments I think this story is just a start, that there's so much more to come in this series and more world building. it looks promising. More character development. I actually liked this book because it's different.

and I want Iko to come back too

message 93: by Morgan (new)

Morgan (thegraduatedbookworm) | 7 comments This was my first time reading it. I never really enjoy this genre, but she was able to make it really good! I get why some of you didn't like it in some ways, but for me, I really did love it. I think that it had me constantly thinking about what was going to happen by the end.

Although I did speculate what is of Cinder, it still kind of got me lol! And Marie, they definitely need to bring back Iko! I can't wait to finish the series, just to see if Adri and The Queen get the karma that's on the way.

message 94: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (asongofpagesandwords) | 20 comments I really enjoyed the book too, my biggest complaint is that I had guessed what was supposed to be the major plot twist by the first mention of the lost princess so the "omg

message 95: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (asongofpagesandwords) | 20 comments Goodreads cut off my comment! The OMG what just happened this is crazy stuff - factor wasn't there for me

Asma (oasisgirlmd) | 38 comments Mod
The fact that it's a spin off of one of the most popular fairytales and all the sparkling reviews had set the expectations very high. Yes it's nicely done, characters are nice , it's a completely different world we're experiencing. For that, I give the author credit. But did it live up to all the rave? Sadly, not for me. Perhaps the next books in the series will be better.

message 97: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jessysmomente) | 4 comments I really enjoyed Cinder, probably because I love dystopic novels! And this was the first one I read with cyborgs in it. I like the genre mix very much, I think Marissa Meyer did a great job in adapting Cinderella. So the overall impression of this story is pretty good.
But I had some problems with some issues too. As Sarah already wrote, Dr Erland knew everything from the start. To me he seems a little bit manipulative and I think (and hope) that we will get to know him and his deeper longings better in the next books.
Also, like the other Sarah wrote, the moment they mentioned the lost princess I thought it must be Cinder. This is the one thing that really really bothers me about the plot. Maybe Meyer could have given some wrong clues or so.
The characters are a little bit stereotype, but I think that's a fairytale thing. I hope in the following books there are bad character traits in the nice figures and vice versa. But I think in the very end when Cinder decides to leave the palace, something in her is already changing and getting harder or harsher or so. And that Kai right now refuses to accept Cinder the way she is, is something I like too. So there is much room in the next books for many things to happen. At least I hope so, like many of you do, too :-)

message 98: by Marie (new)

Marie (marielee1982) | 42 comments It was annoying that I was able to guess the plot so quickly I def hope that will not be a recurring theme!

message 99: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (asongofpagesandwords) | 20 comments The other books had some things that surprised me and some things that I had guessed fairly on as well, I've yet to read Fairest and Winter though so I'm prepared for some more surprises!

message 100: by Alex (new)

Alex (alexmak) | 2 comments I put a review up on Goodreads. I can see where this book wanted to go, I just think the author wasn't able to execute that vision properly. As a standalone I wouldn't rate Cinder, but as it's part of a series there are some interesting bits and pieces that make me interested to see where the rest of the books go. I wouldn't rush out to buy them all NOW, but if I had a long flight or someone lent me the second book, I'd probably read it.
