Couple breaks up man breaks apart

I can only remember this one part after the couple break up the guy is in is apt which is in a high rise and he cuts his hand and it's bleeding a lot but he doesn't realize it he goes onto the balcony to look out or something and he security guard thinks he is going to jump and pulls him away and points out that he is bleeding and than calls in a shrink this is all I remember if you know what book this is from please let me know thanks
