Welcome to Terminal Coffee! We discuss cheese and Pop Culture here. If You're New You Might Want To Run Away Fast
Stand By Me is the movie based on the short story "The Body" in one of the Bachman books, Different Seasons.
I've never read any of Stephen King's writing (unless you count a book review that I read in a doctor's office waiting room).
Stand By Me was a great movie! That and The Sandlot are very accurate about growing up a boy in those era's
Stand by me is timeless, Chelsea has fallen in love with it, the book and the movie. Misery was scarey to me. I never read Salem's Lot, I saw the movie though. I will have to rectify that situation.
Seriously, for my money it's all about The Shining. Then watching the Kubrick film (not any of the awful remakes made since). Sometimes I wish I lived in the Overlook Hotel. Forever and ever and ever...
I love that Stephen King hated the Kubrick The Shining and made his own and it sucked. Ha ha! Sorry. You know what also sucked? The film The Mist. The ended was horrible and bore no resemblance to the short story's. King is certainly successful with good reason, but I think he's turned kind of misanthropic since his accident... I keep meaning to read The Stand but I am really shallow and want to read shorter things so that my list of books I've read this year will make 50. Does it read fast?
do i really have to read all that boring stuf
i dont care what you say im not gonna
OK everybody lets slowly walk up to Bay bay and see if we can pet it.
Holy crap, how did I miss a King conversation! *curses*Knarik, another good starter is one of his short story collections, which would be a great intro to the man and his style:
Skeleton Crew
Night Shift
Nightmares and Dreamscapes
Everything's Eventual 14 Dark Tales
Different Seasons
Somebody up there was wrong about "The Body," I think. It wasn't a Bachman story. It was in Different Seasons, written as himself, which is actually four novellas rather than short stories, Knarik, and may be some of his best work, though none of it is very horrorific.
If you want to do a longer work,
The Stand is his magnum opus (did I use that term correctly), and I have read it at least 10 times, and I adore it each time. Misery is probably the best example of his non-supernatural horror. And yeah, 'Salem's Lot is a super awesome vampire story. King can get corny in places, but even in his really stinky stuff (like Christine), he's just an incredibly gifted writer and there are still places where you can lose yourself in the story and delight in the words. I don't like fantasy and sci-fi, though, so I've never bothered with any of the Dark Tower stuff.
Phew.
*steps off the SK soapbox*
Yay! I'm a total King pimp!(The more I think about it, the more I think you should definitely do one of the short story collections to get a feel for his horror and then do Different Seasons for the beauty of the stories.)

I also like Salem's Lot, which is one of the SCARIEST vampire books I've ever read.
