This folder is for books that have been turned into movies - WITH ONCE CATCH.

You must have already seen the movie, but not read the book yet!

Please share your suggestions, or any resources you've used to help find your book for this category in this thread.

Amanda | 229 comments I was going to read "Book Thief" but after reading some of the comments on last years challenge I think I will be changing it. I do have "The Lovely Bones" and "Water for Elephants" as well that I could choose. Please let me know of these 3, what one you would recommend.

Having read all three, I would recommend "The Lovely Bones"

Great, thank you for the recommendation Teresa!

message 6: by Frogli (new)

Frogli | 118 comments I'm thinking of reading The Lovely Bones as apparently I downloaded it on kindle at some point, or maybe The Martian although I think I'll use that for the Science Fiction category

message 7: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 29 comments I was thinking of reading Schindler's List or The Princess Bride. I've loved both movies and can't believe I've never read the books.

message 8: by Amy Beth (new)

Amy Beth Since I'm trying to work in some classics this year, I was thinking about Rebecca , but The Princess Bride mentioned above sounds like a lot of fun.

message 9: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 280 comments I am using Somewhere In Time, The original title was Bid Time Return. I got a used copy. I have seen the movie several times, and did not even know it was based on a book until I was googling books into film.

That's one of my favorite movies, and I only read the book for the first time this year. :)

I've read all three. The Book Thief and Water for Elephants were great!! I liked The Lovely Bones. Just not as much as the other two.

message 12: by Vera (new)

Vera Theus | 7 comments I'll read The Color Purple
I love the movie and always wanted to read the book :)

message 13: by Natália (new)

Natália Lopes (silkcaramel) I'll use either The Book Thief or Stardust, since I think I already chose the first one for another category.

My biggest problem is that for the last few years I've not been much of a movie watcher. I'll have to comb through this list to find a few to choose from.

https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

Though I have seen, but not read The Princess Bride. That could work...

Or I may need to watch a movie!

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah The Princess Bride is a great book!

message 16: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I think I am going to read Stardust. I have been wanting to read the book - the movie is sort of a family favorite in our house.

message 17: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthag503) I'll be reading Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail It's the only movie I've seen where I haven't read the book first. This is the hardest category for me!

message 18: by Kim (new)

Kim Ford | 6 comments I just watched last night "The Martian" and can't wait to read the book! The Martian

Amanda | 229 comments Kim wrote: "I just watched last night "The Martian" and can't wait to read the book! The Martian"

I have heard, as usual, the book is so much better than the movie. I loved the book and am curious what you thought about the movie as I haven't seen it yet but have been excited too??

I really enjoyed the movie. I am sure there were details that had to be left out to make the movie, hence why I can't wait to start the book. That one might just be the first one I start in 2016 :)

I really enjoyed both the book and the movie (read the book first)

message 25: by Violet (new)

Violet (trillian8690) | 1 comments I'm gonna use "The Hunger Games." It fits this category, and it crosses over into other book challenges I'm reading (namely, my dystopian novel challenge).

message 26: by Joel (new)

Joel (rocknrolljoel) I think i'll read A Clockwork Orange for this one. I loved the filmy, and I've been meaning to read the book for a while.

message 27: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 4 comments For me it is the Harry Potter series, SHAME SHAME! I haven't read the series yet. But seen all of the movies.

message 28: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Jenny wrote: "For me it is the Harry Potter series, SHAME SHAME! I haven't read the series yet. But seen all of the movies."

I have been trying to think of something for this category, too. I have read only the first one and seen all the movies. Shame on me too! I always miss the obvious. Thanks for the suggestion.

message 29: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jld451) | 34 comments Finished reading "The Help" for this one! Amazing book, I can't believe I didn't read this sooner.

message 31: by Gabriella (new)

Gabriella Andén fd rehbinder | 10 comments I just saw "Truman Capote - in cold blood" over the holidays. Wich is about when TC writes his novel "In cold blood". Would reading that count?

Totally, great movie and book!

message 35: by Margo (new)

Margo (dandylines) Into the Wild
I loved going through the list for this one. Finally settled, I think, on this one.
Other possibilities
"Jurassic Park" - I thought I had read everything by the author, but not this one.
"Secret Garden" - delicate movie.
"The Martian" - loved the movie along with everyone else.
"The Help" - hilarious and touching movie

message 36: by Teresa (last edited Jan 10, 2016 11:45AM) (new)

Teresa (teremazon) The Martian is a great, great book, but I almost enjoyed the movie more, especially the ending.

The Princess Bride is a great recommendation, I'm adding it to my short list.

I have not managed to decide about this category yet. I have a few possibles in my list:

The Prince of Tides Pat Conroy. I think it has won a bunch of awards too.

In My Father's Denby Maurice Gee, which could also go on the "Australia" category

Ordinary People, by Judith Guest

* Either Mockingjay or Catching Fire, as I ruined the experience of reading The Hunger Games for myself by being greedy and impatient and watching the movies after book one. Silly me!

message 38: by Steph's Romance Book Talk (last edited Jan 10, 2016 04:32PM) (new)

Steph's Romance Book Talk (stephsromancebooktalk) So many good books listed above!!

I just finished The Time Traveler's Wife for mine, excellent especially if you can get the audio version and read along because there is a lot of jumping around.

There are also:
The Devil Wears Prada
Black Hawk Down
Snow Falling on Cedars
The Other Boleyn Girl
Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs
Under the Dome

Just a few of my books that I need to get to :-) Hopefully some of those will fit into other categories as well :-)

Excellent book!! I loved it!!

message 40: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) I read "virgin suicides" - Maybe not the most popular movie but definitely an interesting read!

message 41: by Teresa (last edited Jan 13, 2016 06:18PM) (new)

Teresa (teremazon) @Stephanie, The Time Traveler's Wife has also been in my mind for a couple of days! Decisions, decisions. Also, I had no idea that The Devil Wears Prada was based on an actual book. Another interesting idea

message 42: by D (new)

D | 9 comments My book is Disney's Maleficent by Rudnick.

message 43: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 11 comments I'm going with the movie that made me afraid to go into the water, Jaws.

Peabody D wrote: "My book is Disney's Maleficent by Rudnick."

I didn't know that was from a book. That would be an interesting read.

message 46: by Regine (new)

Regine O I'll read "A Clockwork Orange". Fantastic movie - so I hope the novel won't disappoint.

message 47: by Kristin (new)

Kristin I decided to read "Insurgent." I already read the first book of the series about 1 year ago. So I figured I might as well read the 2nd book. I also thought I would read the 3rd book also, before it comes out in theaters.

message 48: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 6 comments This is a category I struggle with, it appears on a number of challenges I have done or seen over the last couple of years. If I know a book will be made into a movie and I am interested I will read the book first. If I happen to see a movie and then find out it was a book first I have no desire to read the book.

I happened to see "How to train your Dragon" a couple of weeks ago on TV, such an adorable movie. I then checked out the book and it also appears to have been well received by many. So this will be the one for this category.

message 49: by Paula (new)

Paula (paupaula) | 3 comments It's Me and Earl and The Dying Girl for me. I recommend the movie as it was such a delight to watch and so aesthetically pleasing!

I read the book right after and I still loved the movie more than the book! :)

message 50: by Katie (new)

Katie | 12 comments I loved The Book Thief and Water for Elephants
