This folder is for books that have been banned or challenged.

Please share your suggestions, or any resources you've used to help find your book for this category in this thread.

Neda (nedamame) | 22 comments GoodReads has a list on Listopia...I know, I'm stating the obvious... :)

I found this link with most challenged books of 2014: http://www.ala.org/bbooks/sites/ala.o...

And another list for that includes some classics as well: https://www.ila.org/initiatives/banne...

And one from a Canadian source: http://www.freedomtoread.ca/challenge...

It seems to me that books with sexually explicit language, LGBT themes or magic (like Harry Potter series) generally end up being challenged, especially if they are aimed at the YA audience.

So very true! It's harder to find books that have been successfully banned, but it does happen sometimes.

Amanda | 229 comments I am reading "Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger

message 5: by Natália (new)

Natália Lopes (silkcaramel) I'm going with Dracula, because it's one of those books I should have read already but don't know why I didn't and this category, along with the classic book one, is the perfect opportunit to finally pick them up.

La_mariane | 36 comments If someone want to read Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, I can absolutely reccomand it : it's great, and the movie adaptation is very good too.

message 7: by Kathy (new)

Kathy I just ordered Persepolis from Amazon specifically for this category. I can't wait to read it.

I really liked this book!!

Teresa Kander I chose Identical by Ellen Hopkins

message 10: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 29 comments I've had To Kill a Mockingbird on my TBR list for awhile. Shame that I haven't read it yet but will do so for this category.

message 11: by Donna (new)

Donna | 13 comments If you have never read any Willa Cather then you should. She was considered very radical for her time. My favorite is O' Pioneers. Wonderful!

message 12: by Margo (new)

Margo (dandylines) Lady Chatterly's Lover
A classic and read for college English class.

message 13: by Ann-Marie (new)

Ann-Marie (amsjob) This was a difficult one, but I did find out that Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes has been banned (I think for it´s , at the time, explicit sexuality.

message 14: by Margo (new)

Margo (dandylines) The Grapes of Wrath
I know it was challenged and banned in various places. Probably because of communism and some sexual scenes.
My mother had to sign a permission slip for me to read it !

message 15: by Margo (new)

Margo (dandylines) The Kite Runner
Found this from Neda's list.

message 16: by Jessie (new)

Jessie Gussman | 8 comments I'm reading Holy Bible: King James Version

I'm not very good with links but Wikipedia has this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

message 17: by Margo (new)

Margo (dandylines) Isn't ironic that a "banned" book was (or is) placed in every hotel room ?
Frankly I do not think anything except child pornography should be banned.

message 18: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teremazon) I will be re-reading Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller

message 19: by Gabriella (new)

Gabriella Andén fd rehbinder | 10 comments I think I'll have a go at this one:
The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie. I've seen several documentarys about him and the fatwa that was issued against him and been curious about this book ever since.

message 20: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 9 comments I'll be reading "A Clockwork Orange". This book's status as a banned book has been debated for years. I wanted to choose a book that was banned for a reason, not just because a small vocal group took offense against it. I'm writing a syllabus for a Banned Book college course, and I'm curious about this book that keeps popping up in banned book discussions.

message 21: by Cinder (new)

Cinder | 44 comments I think I will join those reading A Clockwork Orange. It's been on my "to read" list for quite some time. :)

message 22: by Amy Beth (new)

Amy Beth I thought I would add this link here for those, like me, who are still looking for something that fits this category.

Elise | 12 comments American Psycho is a good one for this category.
But beware, not for the faint of heart.
It actually made me feel ill at one point!

message 24: by Carla (new)

Carla (carla1957) I am going to read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time from the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2015 posted by Amy Beth.
