I don't remember a ton, but here's what I recall: - protagonist was a girl (probably orphan, definitely young) -had a stuffed toy she loved, it broke (eye came off or maybe a seam ripped) she sews it to fix, but the poke of the needle brings the toy to life! -she the repeats the process with many toys -one toy goes "wrong" -- a rubber toy (maybe a duck). The girl is unsure if he is malicious bc he is "hard" (all others were stuffed) or if she didn't really love him enough like the other toys.
I feel like they were maybe sailing on a ship at one point?
