Chrissie Well, so far I like it. I like how he talks about heirlooms and how you attach memories of people to objects and how objects REALLY are nothing.

I remember what I saw when I was there, at the Metropol. Oh gosh, I remember how we couldn't order caviar and how I ordered cucumbers. We were just at the restaurant.

message 117: by Chrissie (last edited Sep 10, 2016 06:40AM) (new)

Chrissie Angela, I have not come far, but I like it so far! You can read a book description but that says nothing about the author's ability in capturing a time and place through their writing.

What about this wonderful line said by the Count to a little girl in the restaurant, "Was the minding of one's business no longer taught in schools." She had asked him where his mustaches had gone. The language is both marvelous and perfect. The aristocracy is perfectly drawn. Much of what is said is implied. I like that. The more you know about the time and era the more you understand. I also like that sentences about the similarity in the look of children and dogs. Either you understand or you don't.

ETA: Yeah, I like the lines, but I can't figure out where the book is going! I am getting a bit exasperated.

ETA later:I don't know, I sometimes get totally lost on what is being said. Sometimes the language is a bit too sophisticated for me. I prefer simple over convoluted.

Chrissie I am glad you are going to read this, Leslie, and I hope you like it as much as I did. It is a biography of a place, time and family in beautiful prose. Realistic too. It is not all sweet and cutesy.
