No, you're not imagining it...I majored in print journalism back in the dark ages when there were still newspapers, and I can't believe the depths to which politicians and the media have sunk...the slapdash, lazy coverage, kowtowing to politicians' ridiculous distractions rather than offering real analysis and hard-hitting coverage - I'm glad my wonderful, tough-as-nails old-school journalism professor is long gone, he would be appalled!

Sounds like journalism over here. I'm going to start reading The Guardian again. (I stopped after the Kathleen Hale thing) The 2 NZ online newspapers I read are more like lifestyle magazines.

& we have started watching Al Jazeera news a couple of times a week. Makes you realise how far standards have dropped.

So true - I read several online news sources and only watch Public Broadcasting's "NewsHour" - no yelling guests or announcers, just in-depth, calm analysis- about the only place I've found that anymore!

I make sure that I don't see any "news" before bed or, just like a kid, I'll have nightmares. It's so funny that the pioneers hungered for news because they felt so out-of-touch - they didn't know when they had it good, I think!

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments Ditto ditto on all the comments on the news. I can't stand to listen to it. My husband used to read it every morning and it would make him so angry I almost couldn't live with them. Our life has improved since you stopped reading the news.

I amsuper excited about whatever tomorrow's announcement is.

So true! We are on a long-term visit to my husband's hometown in Illinois to help his parents adjust to health issues (she's gone into a nursing home and father-in-law is making plans to move them both to his hometown in Ohio), and we've taken an apartment for a few months. We got an internet connection but didn't bother with cable tv and frankly don't miss it a bit - it's rather nice to be disconnected a bit. You can still read news but don't have to be bombarded with it 24/7.

That's exactly it - bombarded is how I feel with media news. I much, much prefer to read my news.

message 159: by Kim (new)

Kim Kaso | 511 comments Well, and I like my news is thoughtful, digestible bites. I do not want it clamoring for my attention 24/7, and I prefer for it to be accurate & properly sourced. My dad was a journalist, was an editor-in-chief of a newspaper and worked in radio. He always insisted on checking & re-checking facts and sources, and at the dinner table we had to argue civilly and cogently.

The way the reporters make themselves the star of the story annoys me to no end. And those small qualifying words, like "just" and "only", which they insert in order to get their own points across drive me crazy!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I'm laughing here & feel guilty that I have given my idea too much of a build up!

Karlyne, I hope you are still here.

I make it that Friday's Child has won by a whisker!

So what I would like to do is

September - Fridays Child
October - The Conqueror
November - Sprig Muslin
December - month off
January - The Black Sheep
February - Lady of Quality

I know some of you are going to say we've had our month off during The Black Moth/Powder & Patch/Cousin Kate :p but I still think it would be good to have a catch up month in December - not just for this group but for all our reading.

Why I'd like to do The Black Sheep & L of Q back to back? Mild spoiler possibly for both books? (view spoiler) My GH loving friend has read L of Q more recently & thinks I'm being too hard on this book.

So would this schedule be OK with everyone?

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments That schedule looks good to me Carol!

QNPoohBear | 1638 comments I've never read The Conqueror. The next two are in my bottom list and the last two are in my top list. I don't care that they have the same plot. Black Sheep is slightly better in the relationship department, in my opinion, but cousin Maria (is that her name? The annoying chatty companion?) in LoQ makes me laugh.

It is funny how we all have different ideas on favourite books and really can't understand how anyone else can think exactly the opposite. The Corinthian is one that I have enjoyed reading and Devil's Cub is my most re-read book, I need to find a new copy (or kindle edition go on sale) as it has been read so often it is falling apart. And I can't fathom how anyone can find that french girl in the Talisman Ring a likeable heroine. I want to slap her as much as I want to slap the dreadfully spoilt brat Tiffany.

I so agree! Devil's Cub was my first ever Heyer and remains my absolute favourite. I replaced each copy as it fell apart! and now I have it on my iPad so it should never fade or disintegrate!
Like you I loathe the Tiffany type characters and can find nothing at all to redeem them. Yet others can - and actually speak up on their behalf in discussions on here.
I think the discussion on "A Civil Contract" on Jenny, revealed the most polarised views on one of Heyer's heroines that I have ever come across and so I totally understand how we can all love Heyer but not necessarily like all her books or all her characters in the same way. Of course that makes for interesting discussions!

Hello, I can see how these two heroines seem the same, but I feel that the main difference is that the French girl (Eustacie? I think) does not show ny unkindness towards others and doesn't try to put them down. I find your opinion very interesting. What is it that makes her so annoying to you?

It is not the unkindness that is the problem. To me both of these girls are variations of the "silly simpering misses" who will eventually end up as the "silly fond mamas" who do nothing but lie on the sofa all day and have hysterics. I prefer the sensible capable heroines who can think for themselves and have plenty of common sense and are not afraid to get on with sorting their lives out. Which is why I prefer the heroines to be like Mary rather than her sister (whatever she was called) from Devil's Cub, Ancilla rather than Tiffany and -moving away from Heyer - Elizabeth Bennett rather than the younger Bennett sisters.

message 192: by Judith (new)

Judith Judith L: I've read, perhaps in a recent issues of JASNA's Persuasions, an article that Lady Susan (in the movie "Love and Friendship") is an incarnation of the woman Mary Wollstonecraft (in her book "Vindication of the Rights of Women") stated was the result of the non-education of women which emphasized manipulation of men and women as a coping mechanism. The article put it more elegantly, but basically if you keep a woman economically and socially dependent upon the males in her family and her husband, and do not educate her sensibly, and do not enable her to be self-supporting, what else can a fairly intelligent woman do than act like Lady Susan? The article's thesis is very interesting; LS was written one year after Wollstonecraft's book was published and there is evidence, per the article, that showed Jane Austen had read it.

I just find her affectations intensely irritating. But I think it's partly the way GH writes French people in general, constantly mangling their English and filling up their conversation with French words, just so that we never forget that This Is A French Person Speaking. She's also rather old to be so starry eyed and romantic - she acts more like a 14-year-old.
But I will say she comes up to scratch when needs be, so I won't say I hate her. She just irritates me.
