I bought my last one, Envious Casca, a few years ago in Wyoming (wait, I think it was South Dakota), and actually paid $4 for it. I thought that rather exorbitant, compared to all my cheap book and thrift store finds. Now, I'd think that pretty reasonable, though. All of mine were pretty much well-read, but they do have their covers - which is a big plus!

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4143 comments I can't remember what I paid for mine, they were at my local used bookstore, which is usually a feast-or-famine kind of place...this time of year is no good, schools just let out so the shelves will be gutted from folks stocking up before heading to the beach!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ My most expensive was around NZ$20 for the Great Roxhythe - which turned out to be a rip off photocopied edition. Cheapest has been free.

I just got back from the Oregon coast, where I was so excited to visit my usual used book stores, but it seems that mostly everyone has more recent fiction now, with the more "vintage" stuff hanging out at $15-$25. Gulp. But I did score a couple of good ones!

I did get a whole box of Heyers (free!) from a friend who found them in her friend's basement after her mom died. They were mostly held together with wishes and prayers, but, although a few are duplicates, I'm definitely hanging onto them just for the fact that they were so well-loved!

Gotta love a book that bears all the marks of being a treasured friend!

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments I don't have all that many Heyer books; maybe 7 or 8 paperbacks and 5 or 6 ebooks. What I do have is a boatload of Mary Stewart books, all of the romantic suspense novels she ever wrote except the last couple, which are mediocre. When I was reorganizing my downstairs library a few weeks ago, I found three copies of Airs Above the Ground, and two copies of This Rough Magic, Nine Coaches Waiting and The Ivy Tree. I don't even know how that happened ...

Mary Stewart Book Fairies! They've visited me, too! Better than Father Christmas, anyday. (Actually, I picked up the paperbacks over time because they're easier to read, and of course I had the original book-of-the-month (or something!) hardbacks from my childhood. But Book Fairies sound better. )

message 110: by Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ (last edited Jun 14, 2016 12:01PM) (new)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments I wish the book fairies would bring me copies of books I haven't read yet, rather than extra copies of ones that are already in my library. :) Actually, I remember buying some of the duplicates because I found used hardbacks or paperbacks that were in better condition than what I already had. But the 3 copies of AATG? That is seriously a mystery to me. I think I even had a 4th copy of it that I mailed to a GR friend last year, LOL.

ETA: No, it was an extra copy of The Moon-Spinners that I mailed to my friend. So I'm not quite as crazy as I thought!

I wish they'd send me some D.E. Stevenson! I've had so much fun discovering her, but apparently there were very few paperbacks of her issued, so all that remains are the vintage hardbacks, starting at $15 at my "cheap" book store on the coast. Can't quite justify a collection like that!

I agree! I need to read more of her. Thanks for the reminder.

One can never have too many Mary Stewart or Georgette Heyer books, if only so that one can get others hooked by giving them copies. I'd love to have them all before me, unread ...

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments Somehow, I have THREE copies of the Talisman Ring. Three. I like it, but it is not my absolute favorite. I would like.

At our library's trade paperback section (take some books, bring them back or donate some or just keep the ones you take) I found 7 GH's in pretty bad condition, but I have them on my desk. It makes me happy just to look at them. They are PAN and PAN GIANT, from the 1960s.

Oh, my, just imagine all those titles lined up for the first time on your shelves...

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I'm contemplating my third copy of Beauvallet as it's an old hardback which looked to have a family tree at the back.

I wish her mysteries would turn up at work. Other than the above book & a paperback of The Tollgate nothing has come in for a long time.

message 116: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2186 comments I have all Georgette Heyers books now. Some years ago my local bookshop ( which I really don't have much mass on) were selling the ones which were being released in lots of six. I bought all the ones I didn't have. Also many years ago I was bidding on ebay for a biography of Heyer by Jane Aiken Hodge but it went way beyond my range. Two months later it appeared for my birthday from my brother. Even though he wouldn't read any of her books I think he knows nearly as much about her as I do now from all the books he's bought me :)

What a great story about your brother! and what a nice brother. :) My husband would do something like that; he's more inclined to splurge when he's in the right mood than I am.

This reminds me of an old story: Several years ago there was a fund-raiser for a friend in my community who was suffering from some severe medical problems. She's prominent locally in the arts, so there was a music and arts performance and fundraiser for her, which included a lunch for two people with Brandon Mull, author of the Fablehaven series, a YA fantasy that a couple of my kids REALLY loved (Mull is a local guy). I really wanted to send my kids to lunch with him, and I bid on this silent auction item until it went somewhere north of $100, and then bailed. I still regret not sticking with it to the end; I think it would have been a priceless memory for my kids.

Isn't it funny that we'll put some arbitrary figure on something like that? I would have done the exact same thing - and regretted it, too!

message 119: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2186 comments It's easy to regret something but at the time you thought you were making the right decision. I really really wanted that book but we didn't have a lot of money and I just couldn't warrant buying it. I too was gutted but thrilled when I received it later. I'm not much good for buying for myself but can do it for someone else without thinking twice. Think I'd need to see a shrink to work that one out lol!!

Oh, absolutely, Teresa! I wouldn't have bought the book for myself, either, and I probably wouldn't have regretted it (too much), but I'm with Tadiana that I would have wished for more guts to spend the money on priceless memories for my kids!

Really?!? I'm so glad to hear it!

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments I'm in luck! I know I searched my library's catalog several months ago and they had no D.E. Stevenson books, but I just checked again and now there are six. Jackpot! :)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Hi! Time to think about our September read!

Participation has been down - partly because the last 3 books aren't most people's favourite & partly because of the Northern Hemisphere summer.

So I would like to nominate a Regency that is a 5★ for a lot of people. Out of the unread GH's, that would be - The Black Sheep, Friday's Child & Sprig Muslin. (I also love The Corinthian but I know a lot of people don't)

So I'll nominate Friday's Child. :)

Edited for super embarrassing typo! :D

message 125: by Louise Sparrow (new)

Louise Sparrow (louisex) | 460 comments I'll nominate Black Sheep then

SVQ Sprig Muslim would be a very different book I think... sorry but it made me laugh, autocorrect?

Aaarrrghhh, you know I had to stare at that for a couple of minutes before I realised what was wrong??? They don't call me the Typo Queen for nothing!

The Black Sheep is my favourite of GH's post 1960 works! :)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments I'll nominate Sprig Muslin, since I haven't read either that or Friday's Child.

Would love to read these but they are quite pricey and any libraries here would not have them. I'm doomed (as Frazer in Dad's Army would say) :)

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments I'm one that has been AWOL. Around here it's a combination of parenting a spirited toddler and work being busy. I've got an idea for one of the books read. Since I'm all about democracy I won't say what it is until after we have reached consensus. ;)

Also The Conqueror is October's read. It is the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings & one of our members requested last year that we read it in October.

Working in with this & my cunning plan I'm more than happy to read all these books. :)

All Will Be Revealed tomorrow!

International politics too - & over here isn't much better.

Don't forget to vote for what book you would like to read in September, Karlyne! (or say you are happy with any of the three!)
