I've set up some Group Challenges for the New Year, 2016.

Our Group Challenges let you set a reading goal for yourself to read a certain number of SF&F books that fit the criteria of that Challenge. It's a SF&F-oriented complement to the Goodreads Annual Reading Challenge. Because each Challenge lets you set your own goal for the number of books you want to read, it's a form of self motivation, not a competition.

The SF&F 2016 Reading Challenge   The SF&F 2016 Reading Challenge

Set yourself a goal for reading Science Fiction and Fantasy books in 2016.

The SF&F 2016 Discussion Challenge   The SF&F 2016 Discussion Challenge

Set yourself a goal for reading Science Fiction and Fantasy selected by our group for discussion in 2016. Join the conversations!

The SF&F 2016 Explorer Challenge   The SF&F 2016 Explorer Challenge

Set yourself a goal to read SF&F books by authors you've never read before. Explore new worlds, find new favorites!

The SF&F 2016 Award Challenge   The SF&F 2016 Awards Challenge

Set yourself a goal to read SF&F books which have won awards, such as the Hugo and Nebula, or any other award.

The SF&F 2016 Graphic Challenge   The SF&F 2016 Graphic Novel Challenge

Set yourself a goal to read SF&F Graphic Novels in 2016.

The SF&F 2016 Short Works Challenge   The SF&F 2016 Short Works Challenge

For lovers of SF&F short stories, novelettes, novella, anthologies & collections.

Note that Goodreads only displays two Group Challenges at the top of the Group Homepage. To see all the Challenges for the group, you can click on "More challenges..." below the Challenges section on the Homepage.

You can see all our challenges, current and past, on the Group Challenges page.

How To Set Up A Group Challenge Goal

Click on one of the Challenges listed above to get to the Challenge's page.

Then, enter the number of books you want to read for that challenge.

Finally, enter the name of a shelf on your personal bookshelf where you'll put the qualifying books. E.g., I use sff-2016-reading-challenge, sff-2016-explorer-challenge, sff-2016-discussion-challenge, and so on. (Unlike the Goodreads Reading Challenge, only books you add to the designated bookshelf will count towards your Group Challenge. (You also need to mark the book as "read" and set the "date read" of the book within the Challenge's period — 2016 — for it to count toward your goal.) Using designated bookshelves for each Challenge lets you read books that don't count toward your challenge, maybe even something that isn't science fiction or fantasy (I've heard rumors such things exist!) If you name a shelf for your challenge that you haven't created for your bookshelves yet, the shelf will be automagically created for you.

Remember to add the bookshelf to books you want to count towards your goal. If a book counts towards more than one challenge goal, be sure to place the book on all the appropriate shelves.

Mid-Year Reminder

Since we've passed both the summer solstice and midyear mark on the calendar, I thought I'd remind folks of our six annual Group Challenges.

Challenges are fun way to motivate yourself to read more of the genre, or explore books you might not otherwise seek out. (It's intended as self-motivation, not a competition.)

For those new to the group, or those who didn't sign up the first time around, It's not too late. You can still set up a Challenge goal for the rest of the year! In addition to the one or two challenges shown on the Group Homepage, there are a total of Six 2016 Group Challenges to choose from. Pick the ones that match your goals.

For those who already signed up, this might be a good time to check on your progress (and make sure you've been putting all the books that should count toward your goal onto the assigned shelf so they get tallied.) If you already reached your goal, you might consider raising it a bit for the second half.

alarm clock   Year-End Reminder

It's getting close to the end of the year, which is also the exciting conclusion of our current Group Challenges! For those of you who signed up for one or more of our six annual Group Challenges, there's still time to reach reach your goal!

This might be a good time to check on your progress and make sure you've been putting all the books that should count toward your goal onto the assigned shelf so they get tallied.

(Remember, our challenges are self-motivation, not a competition. You set your own goals and keep to your own pace.)
