SOLVED. Romance/Fantasy/SciFi w/a bad guy who was made partially of smoke. [s]

I think it's a three book series.
In the second book, a man (possibly with red hair) turns into a (red?) Dragon.
There's a scene where the witch/priestesses (who live in a tower made of bones) are sending a man (and woman?) back in time, and they wrap them in something like spider silk to protect them and there's a black crystal powder.
The Big Bad was infected with some kind of rot in a portal, and now part of his body is made from black smoky stuff. He uses the smoke to absorb/kill people, but every time he does, it consumes more of his body.
I'm pretty sure this was a romance...maybe? I had the paperback in the early 2000's I think, but I don't know how old it was.
