Steve Lemuria | 4 comments Hi there,
So i read this book when i was much younger. centres around a childs experience coming into contact with ET's off the coast of (Maine?) somewhere on the east of the US i think. they then proceed to fly off to distant communities for a galactic tour of what societies can become should they overcome the "type I" civilization hurdle.
Its a really fascinating book. the child describes a heart logo of some sort for the ET's. says communication was telepathic. if anyone could help that would be great. i remember the cover being blue. maybe a depiction of a being in a white space suit looking thing?

thanks!

Is it YA rather than children's? (Normally a book with a child protagonist would be aimed at a younger reader than YA.) Does it have illustrations? What year did you read it?

message 3: by Steve (new)

Steve Lemuria | 4 comments It may be a children's book. I read it in the late 90's early 2000's. It only had a few illustrations I could remember. I think one was a depiction of the beach that the primary encounter took place. And another may have been a diagram of the symbol that the child saw the beings wearing on thier clothing. It was a heart based symbol as I mentioned before. It's not a very long book. Less than a couple hundred pages perhaps. Paper back.

Steve, can you describe the "type o" hurdle?

No other children aboard? It could be a boy or girl?

message 7: by Steve (new)

Steve Lemuria | 4 comments one child, a boy id like to say but i could be wrong.

I meant to say Type 1 civ. The Kardashev scale is a method of measuring a civilization's level of technological advancement, based on the amount of energy a civilization is able to utilize.[1] The scale has three designated categories called Type I, II, and III. A Type I civilization uses only resources available on its home planet, Type II harnesses all needed energy from its local star, and Type III of its galaxy.[2] The scale is hypothetical, and regards energy consumption on a cosmic scale. It was first proposed in 1964 by the Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev. Various extensions of the scale have been proposed since, from a wider range of power levels (types 0, IV and V) to the use of metrics other than pure power.

the book talks about how we as humans need to make the transition from type 1 to type 2 and how that could end up looking if we are successful...

Bob Hardy | 40 comments This isn't the one, but you should read "Have Space Suit. Will Travel" by Isaac Asimov. He wrote lots of science fiction/adventures that are lots of fun.

Pamela Love | 1510 comments Have Space Suit, Will Travel is indeed a wonderful book, but it's by Robert Heinlein. Have Space Suit—Will Travel

MJ | 1617 comments There was a movie that sounds like this. But think by the time the kid came back, it's was years later, but he was unchanged. Little brother was in college or something. And he brought back one of the little alien animals they found on the way I think. He was locked up by the gov when he first got home.

Pamela Love | 1510 comments This movie sounds like Flight of the Navigator. I just checked, and it doesn't seem to have had a novelization, though.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Were the aliens humanoid?
Were there in villains in the book?
Part of a series?

Steve, you can bump this thread to the top of the list every month or so. That way fresh eyes can see it and perhaps have a idea of the title.

Sue Elleker | 1053 comments Mission To The Heart Stars by James Blish?

Mission to the Heart Stars by James Blish for Sue's suggestion.

message 16: by Steve (new)

Steve Lemuria | 4 comments the aliens were humanoid. the child was picked up off a new england beach. the ET's had (silver?) space suits with a heart and wings logo. shorter story more than anything. No villains in the book other than ourselves... i remember ET's informing child that this could be the future if humanity were able to course correct in terms of environment, politics, etc. ET's spoke about craft being operated by consciousness... not part of series as far as im aware. one off.. the heart logo really stands out.

Steve, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

Have you ruled out all the suggestions in this thread?

message 18: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy | 194 comments This one is more from the younger side of the YA spectrum:
Are you thinking of Fat Men from Space by Daniel Pinkwater? (Sorry, I'm using the phone app rather than the website, so can't insert links).

message 19: by Kate (new)

Kate Farrell | 4040 comments Mod
Fat Men From Space for the link to Jeremy's suggestion.

You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 199 from six months ago where fewer eyes will see it. Get back in the game! Bump!
You can do this by typing a new comment at the end of the thread, or even by typing the word "bump."
Good luck!
