This teen book may have been written in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Thought it was by Robert Cormier but I was wrong (I remember reading it around the time I read "I Am the Cheese"). The characters are quirky. The boy, whose name is Marsh or Marshmallow, has a pet ferret or skunk or rodent of some kind (can't remember). The girl is intrigued with him and his outlandish lies; they are both outsiders who befriend each other. It turns out his father is dead, but he keeps insisting his dad is a spy or something.
