I've been considering writing out the ending before I start a new novel, simply because I get a little stutter-stepy towards the end trying to wrap everything up nicely.

Have any of you ever worked out the ending first? Or do you write consecutively?

Roxanne Bland (roxanne2) | 38 comments I'm a pantser, so I tend to write consecutively--point A to point B to point C. I've never tried to work out an ending first. Maybe I'll experiment with it.

Niall Teasdale | 16 comments I generally know what the ending is supposed to be when I start and I'll frequently have a good idea of how it's supposed to look. I won't write it first, however: I'd just have to throw it away because things will have changed by the time I join it up.

And anyway, with my stuff it's often about the journey, not the destination.

L.S. May | 18 comments Sometimes I write the 'end' in the form of an epilogue, or the last few paragraphs, when I'm halfway through. No sense not writing it when it comes to you.

Melissa Dickerson (melissadickerson) I write out of order (whenever a scene comes to me), and then make things all meet up in the middle.

J.D. Wright (everealm) | 15 comments I do keep a document open at all times, called "snippets". It's where I put random scenes as they come to me. I just copy and paste them over later, as I need them. Other than that, I typically do write in order. For me, I find that things flow better that way. I have had to skip a chapter when I wasn't in the right mood for it, though, and come back to it. I use a heavy outline, so it's easier for me to do that.

Aaron Speer (aaronlspeer) | 33 comments Generally I know what the ending is before I start. I find it gelps to work backwards in my head.
However, the book im currently writing has several different paths to the finale and I'm not sure how best to get there yet. As i go back through with my editor things are tweaked and changed, therefore making the paths change.
The ending was written and now I find completely irrelevant for how the book will end now lol

BB (cptsweatpntz) | 11 comments I like to write the ending first. It kind of makes it easier for me to write the steps on how to get there if I do. A lot of times I'll write in pieces; the end here, middle there, the beginning somewhere in the middle.
