..."Poldark--unlike most of them--is pure invention. When I was in my early twenties my best friend was a young chemist called Ridley Polgreen. He was some years older than I was, and died tragically when he was thirty-two. He was not remotely like Ross Poldark, being a strict Wesleyan, non-smoking, non-drinking, but with a tremendously lively sense of humour and a deep appreciation of all that was good and beautiful in the life. When I wished to choose a name, I thought first to use the name Polgreen. Then it seemed to me better that I should use a name no one else had ever had; also Polgreen seemed not quite strong enough. So the name Poldark came into being."
