I was not enthralled, mostly because I thought the murderer was obvious well before he/she is revealed. And I just don't think a serial killer belongs in this type of story. That said, like all of the Poldark series, the story is well written.
I thought it was Phillip (I mean, why did he laugh when assigned the role of tracking down the killer?). I still don't trust him, even though he saved Demelza.
That was creepy and I didn't like it but it kept me reading! I didn't know who it was except it had to be someone wealthy enough to afford cigars. Do you buy Dwight's theory that Paul was brain damaged and that led to the murders? I don't. He may be brain damaged but Demelza never liked him or thought he was a good companion for Jeremy. I did like Paul better than Stephen though, until this novel. I also think Winston Graham enjoyed writing suspense and couldn't help throwing in this odd plot.
