Shomeret | 1494 comments 4)Ron's Big Mission by Rose Blue and Connie J. Naden (biographical children's book)30 pages. Started: 11/9 Finished: 11/9

Why Read: The central character is African American astronaut Ron McNair who got killed in the Challenger explosion. It focuses on how he got his first library card in the 1950's in South Carolina when African Americans weren't allowed to have library cards. I think that knowing his future will make this book poignant for me.

Comments: A kind white woman named Mrs. Fielding had been checking out books for Ron, but Ron insisted on checking out books himself this time. This caused quite a bit of a stir including the police being called because a small child who wants a library card must be a danger to public order. Eventually, the librarian hand wrote a library card for him and allowed him to take books out. Today that library is dedicated to the memory of Ron McNair, a true hero. Rating A

5)The Islands at the End of the World by Austin Aslan (YA post-apocalyptic fantasy) 358 pages. Source: Library Started: 11/13 Finished: 11/14

Why Read: This sounded interesting. Due to a disaster Hawaii is cut off from the rest of the world.

Comments: The central character is Leilani, a sixteen year old girl who has epilepsy and lives with her family on the Big Island. She goes to Oahu with her father for a clinical trial of a new epilepsy drug. Then the disaster struck and her life changes drastically. Since there is no power, she and her father have to travel back home very slowly island by island. During their adventures, Leilani discovers that her epilepsy has given her a startling ability. Rating B+ There's a sequel. I want to know what happens next.

6)Embracing the Wild in Your Dog, an Understanding of the Authors of Our Dog's Behavior-Nature and the Wolf by Bryan Bailey (animal behavior) Source: Amazon Started: 11/5 Finished: 11/12

Why Read: This deals with what dogs have in common with wolves. I'm very interested in this topic.

Comments: Explains why treating dogs as if they were human children is dangerous to both dogs and humans. He is a consultant on how to deal with badly behaving dogs. There are insights, but there is also a great deal of repetition. Rating B-. See my review at http://shomeretmasked.blogspot.com/20...
