2016 Reading Challenge

Audiobooks totally count! Audiobooks are a great way for people who have to spend a lot of time in a car or on a bus to enjoy books they might not have time for. An audiobook can be a very different experience, too, if the reader is exceptional or it's a full cast.

Also, for us visually impaired (etc.) folks, audiobooks are reading, full stop. I mean, I could have the screen reader do it, but it's a lot less pleasant. ;D

I did as well. I am also going to pass it out to my book club when we meet in January.
Share as much as you want! We're almost to 1,000 members! So many new people in the last few days.

I would never have gotten through last year's challenge without audiobooks as I spend much of my time in the car. It's also a great way to experience books who's category may not be something you enjoy (for me it was classic romance.)

I also drive a lot! They totally count!

I'm really excited about the categories!

Kerry I totally agree. I might even suggest specific nationalities such as "West African" Literature or Central American authors as several of these authors may not be well known and this may help others to branch out of their comfort zone :)

If you have 2 that fit into a category, I would go with that idea. I just bought a book today in the checkout line and she was an author from my state. I already had chosen "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" for the challenge, so I will probably just read them both. I have set my goal at 70 books, since I read 60 this year. Good luck, 100 would be really impressive!

I would check out last year's reading challenge for some ideas... it's never too late (You could complete both this year)! ;)

Ooh I totally love that!

Absolutely! And check out some other reading challenges! I found one recently from Book Riot. There's a lot of overlap with this challenge, but I've pasted their list below:
-A book written by someone when they were under the age of 25
-A book written by someone when they were over the age of 65
-A collection of short stories (either by one person or an anthology by many people)
-A book published by an indie press
-A book by or about someone that identifies as LGBTQ
-A book by a person whose gender is different from your own
-A book that takes place in Asia
-A book by an author from Africa
-A book that is by or about someone from an indigenous culture (Native Americans, Aboriginals, etc.)
-A microhistory
-A YA novel
-A sci-fi novel
-A romance novel
-A National Book Award, Man Booker Prize or Pulitzer Prize winner from the last decade
-A book that is a retelling of a classic story (fairytale, Shakespearian play, classic novel, etc.)
-An audiobook
-A collection of poetry
-A book that someone else has recommended to you
-A book that was originally published in another language
-A graphic novel, a graphic memoir or a collection of comics of any kind (Hi, have you met Panels?)
-A book that you would consider a guilty pleasure (Read, and then realize that good entertainment is nothing to feel guilty over)
-A book published before 1850
-A book published this year
-A self-improvement book (can be traditionally or non-traditionally considered “self-improvement”)

Thanks for the suggested categories! This will help me get to 100!

I do believe you posted this in the wrong thread.

You just go to the following thread: Discussion > Generalities > 2016 Reading Challenge : - here's a shortcut link. Open a new comment then paste in the checklist template.
You can edit this post list later with your plans / the books you read etc by clicking 'edit' below the bottom right of your message. Hope this makes sense.

I understand this would affect the number of total books read--it would be one book for three categories instead of three books for three categories.
Thanks. :)

That is completely up to you. Some people read 52 different books and others combine them.

Oops - sorry - I'll move it.

I was going to fill in my template and found that three of the four categories I've read so far aren't in the template - nonfiction, a trilogy, and a book recommended by a friend. Any chance they could be added in, or should I just add them into my own template?
Thanks. :)

I don't see why your book club books shouldn't count as challenge books as well! With so many categories, they're bound to fit in somewhere!

Hi Elise,
Some of those sound like last year's categories. You can use them as "wild cards" this year!

Hi Elise,

Does that make sense?

I'm going with it just being on the list at some point

Thanks, that is what I was going with but just wanted to see what others thought. I know that the checklist is meant to be flexible. :-)

The app doesn't always play nice...

The main goal is for everyone to read books that they might not otherwise choose, thus expanding beyond their comfort zone. Members of the 2015 group worked together through discussion and voting to come up with list of categories, and most of them allow for plenty of flexibility. We've also added a wild card category, because everyone reads books that just don't fit one of the categories - and those should count too!
We also found in 2015 that reading 52 books isn't realistic for everyone, so this year we have a two tier challenge.
Tier One
Read 36 books selected from the categories. Up to four may be "wild card" books of your choice.
Tier Two
Read a book from each of the 43 categories, plus 9 "wild cards" for a total of 52 books.
