Any series that can compare to dresden?

Caught up on the dresden series and looming for more urban fantasy to fill my need. I'm on book 2 of sandman slim but it isn't holding my attention like dresden did. Also I'm looking into the monster hunter series. Any other recommendations?

Otherwise, check the groups here under UF, I am sure there are other discussions that have recommendations as well. I like Mark Del Franco His connor gray series is very good imo.

The SM Reine series is really well done - paranormal investigation with an edge.

The person up above mention Connor Gray which was a really good series as well.

Sandman Slim was a bit too grindhouse for me, kind of like the Cal Leandros series, but still those are both enjoyable.

Monster Hunter International is a little more action based but still fun.

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) -Andrews, Ilona - don't let anyone tell you otherwise this is a great series. Yes the lead has a love interest but it isn't paranormal romance at all. I was skeptical but its really worth it.

Have to agree with Rich on the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. That's going to be the most Dresden like series.

Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka is a close second. They even joke about Dresden in one line in the book. :)


Hellequin series by Steve McHugh is pretty good as well. Great integration of mythological gods in modern day times as well as an interesting twist to the magic system.

Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia is action packed with a cool twist on monsters, magic and what not.

I tried the first few books in the Sandman Slim and it was a constant grind. I think I stopped reading those after book 3 or 4.

I've actually read a couple of The Secret History series by Simon R. Green and liked them but not sure why I didn't read any more of them.

The Simon Canderous series by Anton Strout was pretty good but he hasn't released another one since 2011.

Can't think of anymore off the top of my head. I haven't updated my read list in a while which I should probably do so I can keep better track of things. :)

I just recently got into the Daniel Faust series by Craig Schaeffer...a sorcerer private investigator living in Las Vegas, who ends up trafficking with some demons while trying to stop some pretty nasty dark practitioners. I'm about halfway through the third one now, and I don't think the books are as good as Butcher at his best, but I've been having fun with them.

The most frequent suggestions include the iron druid novels, ghost hunter international series, Alex Verus series, and the nightside or secret histories novels. My personal favorite (next to the DF books) are the Alex Verus novels.

That thread linked to above is a rabbit hole! I love it. The Dresden series is my favorite UF. I complained loudly and often about "Ghost Story" to anyone who would listen, but damn if I needed get "Cold Days" the day it was released!

I read the Alex Verus and Peter Grant series and they're pretty good. The Iron Druid books weren't for me as I just couldn't get into the main character. But the world-building is solid.

It looks like the Jon Merz "Lawson" series is my next stop. I'll also check out "Rosemary and Rue" and the Daniel Faust books. And then it's back to that thread for more names!

It's almost given me new books and series too many to choose from. I do almost all of my reading via audiobooks so it takes me some time to get through each book. My "to read" lost has grown exponentially thanks to that forum.
