J.Z. O'Brien (jzobrien) I chose to market my novel through KDP Select fully expecting to utilize the free days, but opted to try the Countdown Deal first. I searched on here, and the web, for the experiences of authors using it and found mostly negative posts. I decided to give it a go anyway, mainly because I don't like the idea of giving my work away.

I promoted the Countdown Deal the same as I would have if I had been using Free Days; listing my book on the book-websites that allowed a 99 cent price tag with a free book listing. I'm also running a pay-per-click ad on here and Twitter.

Prior to 4/17/2014 when the Countdown Deal started on my book, Surviving Abe, my record daily sale was 34 at a price of $2.99, yesterday at 99 cents the book was downloaded 106 times, and borrowed twice.

Day 1 had to exceed 90 units for me to call it a success, which it did. In the next few days I will update this post. I hope to prove that 99 cents, instead of Free, is an effective method of How to Promote YOUR book on Amazon.

Susan (susangryder) | 3 comments Thanks! Keep us posted! My deal starts tomorrow, and I'm really interested to see how it goes. I will promote with an ad here and on Twitter, but I don't have enough reviews yet for the paid promoters.

J.Z. O'Brien (jzobrien) Good Luck Susan! ON Twitter I put down $50 to promote tweets about the book and the sale. Each day has a $10 cap and the campaign runs out by mid-day, but maybe it primes the pump?

Also, yesterday I got two 5-star reviews, I hardly slept last night.

Susan (susangryder) | 3 comments Wow, good to know!! I will look into that.

Congrats on your reviews -- your book looks awesome.

Shane Finkelstein | 13 comments Thought I’d update on my Ereader Deal of the Day. It cost $70 and I was featured on Thursday at $.99. Over the next two days, I sold 240 copies of Finding Gordon Lipschitz, which meant that it was basically a break even for me, aside from the $100 I spent on Facebook promoting it. But, getting the book in the hands of 240 new readers was quite exciting.

J.Z. O'Brien (jzobrien) The 1st day of the Countdown Deal at 99 cents resulted in 106 sales, 2 borrowed.
Day 2, still at 99 cents, resulted in 118 sales, 1 borrowed.

Now in day 3 at $1.99, sales have slowed but are still well above the 25 - 30 daily average before the Countdown.
Surviving Abe did get to #11 in Post Apocalyptic, and its Amazon Bestseller Rank has been in the 1300s since yesterday.

I'll update the performance at $1.99 in the next couple of days.

Susan (susangryder) | 3 comments For me: Day 1 of Countdown @ $.99. I have a small Twitter campaign supporting this. But only one sale so far. :(

T.J. Alexian | 71 comments Shane what's the link to the eReader deal of the day? That sounds interesting.

Shane Finkelstein | 13 comments http://ereadernewstoday.com They do an email blast and they have 470,000 facebook likes. I applied for it about six months ago so there is a long waiting list. Tomorrow, I am on choosybookworm.com. Much less exposure, but it only took two weeks to get on it. I will update afterward and let you know how that went.

J.Z. O'Brien (jzobrien) After Action Report.

Overall the KDP Countdown deal proved to be a success for Surviving Abe. The first two days at 99 cents netted 227 downloads compared to the 60, or so, it was on track for without the promotion.

The second tier of the sale at $1.99 also lasted two days and netted 155 downloads.

The added downloads were not a money maker in themselves, but the next two days netted 116 downloads which paid the expenses.

The most important result is the added exposer on Amazon Surviving Abe got by getting in the top 40 of three of Amazon's genre shopping categories.

After using the Countdown and 99 cents, rather than free, I came away wanting to do the Countdown again. It didn't get the book into the top 10 in any category, but into the teens with an #11 in Post Apocalyptic being the best.

However, both Amazon and I like a profit. Here's why I say that:

Yesterday Amazon put out a email with Surviving Abe at the top of a list of recommended books. To give you an idea of what that meant, remember the netted sales of 116 that came in the two days after the sale? The breakdown is 35 the first day and 81 the next, which was the day of Amazon's email.

My conclusion? It pays to pay Amazon.

Shane Finkelstein | 13 comments The Choosybookworm.com deal of the day only netted me 8 sales, but I think the fact that it was on Easter Sunday probably hurt.
