I remember reading this book quite a few years ago while in primary school (between 10-18 years ago)

It was a graphic novel i think because i remember there were pictures on every page and the dialog followed the pictures. It may also have been a series because i think i wanted to read more but our school didn't have them.

The main part i remember about the story the most is the fact that the children (I'm almost positive this is correct or perhaps in the least, teens-young adults) were brought to the dragon eggs held in some sort of palace or chamber and when/if a dragon egg hatched for them it meant they had been chosen as a dragon rider. But as soon as the dragons hatched, they unconsciously attacked their chosen rider as if wild beasts, often scratching/biting and cause injury. Then a split second later they seemed to "connect" to their rider, like becoming conscious of themselves and would curl besides their humans and think or talk their apologies.

The reason i remember this part more than the rest is because this scene had quite alot of blood in it for a primary school book and that the children riders were holding bloodied arms and the like, crying with the dragons looking at them trying to comfort them.

I don't recall much more than that except there may have been a male main character and that i think there was a battle/war either about to begin or they were in the middle of said battle/war.

Any help finding this story would be greatly appreciated.

I think you may be right haha, i haven't been able to find this for years, and although i looked into the Pern books, i forgot to check if there were graphic novels.
