I read a book a few years back that I am trying to find. I remember a scene near the beginning in which a couple is in a museum, in New York or Brooklyn or... The husband is suddenly murdered while he and his wife/girlfriend are looking at a piece of art. The wife/girlfriend runs after that and tries to disappear. I have some sense that this was about Irish gangs in New York, but I am pulling a blank about anything else.

Lobstergirl, I have no idea. I can't remember anything about the book other than that scene. It would not have been an ebook. Something I held in my hands. I'm thinking male author, but...
A long shot - Murder at the National Gallery by Margaret Truman?
Beanoir, around what year did you read this book?
How was the man killed - shot, stabbed, etc.?
Is this contemporary or historical fiction?

Hi Kris,My memory was that it took place in the Boston or somewhere in the east of the U.S. I can't remember whether the man was stabbed or shot, but I do have an image of blood on the floor of the gallery and everyone gathering which allowed the woman to leave. I am associating it with an Irish author, but I could be completely wrong about that. Not Margaret Truman's book, although that looks interesting. Thanks! I would have read this book ten years ago maybe? 2005? So frustrating to not remember more!
Boston or New York, or possibly even Chicago. The man and his wife were immigrants. The theme of the book seemed to be about how even in the "new world" they couldn't get away from old grudges or woes where they came from. The man is killed by people who knew him in his country of origin, I think!

Had a look. And did some other research under Irish authors using the tags, but no luck. It was definitely literary fiction.
Hi, since you said that's the only scene you remember, i read a book once where this lady woke up with amnesia, apparently she was running away with her daughter without telling her fiance and ended up in a car accident . however, when she woke up from the hospital, her daughter was nowhere to be found and because of the amnesia she couldn't tell where her daughter was. so in an effort to find her daughter, she had to try and remember why she was running. there is a scene where she remembers witnessing a murder in an art gallery and fleeing from the scene, it might be a long shot but you could still check it out, here is a linkhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Hi Kris and Vanessa. Sorry for the long delay in responding. It's interesting how both these books have a theme that might work with this memory I have! It's driving me crazy that I can't remember it! Thanks for your effort and suggestions. :)
Hi Kris, Vanessa, and Lobstergirl. I found it! It's Sebastian Barry's On Caanan's Side.A great read!
Thanks!
