Contemporary? Historic? Fiction/non-fiction? When did you read it? Format - hard cover, soft cover, e-book? Genre - mystery, romance, etc?

What was the doctor's relationship to the girl? Why was he researching her paternity?

Contemporary, hard cover, fiction, sort of mystery/romance/adventure - read last year. Doctor receives letter from a woman that states he is the father of her daughter. He leaves his current wife to go to the village where this woman works (in a health clinic)in Alaska to search for the truth. He ends up staying there and working at the clinic. He remembers getting drunk with her but never thought they had sex. He eventually learns that the young girl is not his daughter. The book begins with a scene when a boy and his dog are attacked by a polar bear. This seems unrelated to the story until the end of the book where this scene is revisited. Ironically, the doctor learns that this boy is his son, conceived from a one night stay at an Eskimo village. He ends up staying with this woman (who is a successful artist) and his (her) son.
