Change in Tone?

A friend mentioned that in his book WG said his writing style had changed by the time he got to this book. Did you find the beginning to be confusing and "spaghetti-western" type? Do the older, familiar characters seem different?

What would be your advice to someone reading this book, but having a hard time "getting into" it--despite wanting to stick with the saga?
