SOLVED. YA 2 boys (step brothers?) - coming of age? naked in woods [s]

I read this in school around 20 years ago in paperback. I remember there being 2 boys I think step-brothers that just met and one might have bullied the other and there was a scene involving them being naked in the woods, I think one of them got badly beaten up and I vaguely remember but might be wrong a large red house and them being up on the roof.

I think this was on the school curriculum on the UK in the 90s.

No idea if I'm remembering even vaguely correctly because I lost the book halfway through reading it but 'I'm The King Of The Castle'? This could be outrageously wrong, but I know they were conflicting step brothers

Thanks, as soon as I read your comment I knew it was right. Just looked it up and read the synopsis and it is the book I was looking for. Ironically my wife is a big Susan Hill fan but hasn't read this one yet.
