Yoly (macaruchi) | 795 comments I recently (a couple of weeks ago) among other things finished the Wayward Pines series. I had read the first one in May but read the other two last month. It was great fun!
I also watched the Wayward Pines TV series which wasn't as good as the books (they never are!) but it was also enjoyable.

Blimey, I don't recall the book being so bad, I might have revisit it for a fresh perspective - maybe I was suffering from hype syndrome...! Thanks for putting this recommendation, added to read.

Kind of funny some of the reviews for GoG seem to be arguing with the author's exception to Golden making stuff up even though he interviewed her for accuracy. Not only a disservice to an actual retired geisha who offers her time on such a fascinating experience, but ultimately rude to portray her as something she was not on knowing the truth and having this as your blurb!! ..."this brilliant debut novel presents with seamless authenticity and exquisite lyricism the true confessions of one of Japan's most celebrated geisha."

Sigh.

Jessica O'Toole (jayotee) On topic, I'm currently reading The Secrets of Jin Shei - I'm loving the secret sisterhood and women-only language and the varied, all-female leads, but I'm only halfway through and things are only just starting to happen. Plus the amazing orphan guard Xaforn has not appeard for ages, which is annoying as she's one of my favourites. So far it could be shorter.

Next up it's either The Lost World (I have been told Sarah Manning (is that her name) is hardcore in this and was ruined in the film), First Rider's Call, which I just picked up in a charity shop, or Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (seen the film series). Anyone read any of these to recommend?

Specifically I'm looking for the portrayal of women for a blog piece, but obviously would like to read something good!

David | 1 comments I am reading Manners & Mutiny by Gail Carriger. I love the series.

Sarah | 71 comments I'm reading Cathrynne Valente's Radiance. It's a dense book. I had so much more I had planned on reading this year!

I've read First Rider's Call, but I can't say that I'd recommend it, although I have friends who loved it. I found the plot a little too predictable and romantic subplot made me want to bang my head against the table. Repeatedly.

Instead, have you read Sheepfarmer's Daughter by Elizabeth Moon? It's classic fantasy, like First Rider's Call, but contains more awesome.

Thanks's for the recommendation, Belinda, I highly approve of more awesome! Perhaps I'll save First Rider's Call for when I want to be riled up... :)

This sounds brilliant, right up my street - great recommendation :) Are the 1st & 2nd in the series any good, and is her story arc conclusion satisfactory? I'm looking for female lead characters for my blog and this might be a good twist in that.

Jessica O'Toole (jayotee) Now reading The Dragon Throne. Only 12% in and heart already broken. Great, confident female lead, unicorns, dragons - shaping up to be a winner, but only 88% more will tell.

Yoly (macaruchi) | 795 comments A couple of days ago I started All the Birds in the Sky and it has been very fun so far. I'm about 23% in.

Earlier this month I finished The Short Drop which I got for free as part of Amazon's Kindle First program. It was a pleasant surprise, it is a very good thriller. I've been getting those free books for two years now, and I had never been tempted to read any of the selections until this one. In less than a month the author had gotten 12,000 reviews on Goodreads with an average of 4 stars.

Carolyn F. I finished Dreadnought (The Clockwork Century, #2) by Cherie Priest and as I was listening to this book I was thinking, "Oooh, that's the guy she ends up with, oh wait nope." Then, "No, I was wrong, this is the guy she ends up with." Nope, this is not a romance book at all unlike the first one and I didn't mind. I loved, loved, loved the ending. Can't wait to see what happens to them next!

Jo (glitchyspoons) | 25 comments The Serpent Tropics by Marie Brennan, American Gods, The Stone Gods, Three parts Dead and the Darkest Powers books by Kelley Armstrong (I started them when I was in high school so figured I'd try to finish them now.)

School is fixing to end and I don't have much to do so I'm reading.
