The Missing Persons League There ya go Martha. Altho I think that there is also an alternate title, but I can't remember what it is right now.
Yep--it was a popular one. Or at least in this area it was popular. I know that my daughter and her friends passed the book around so often it fell apart--so they got another copy--and IT fell apart. Only the third one survived and it looks like it went through a major battle.
And the other thread said a lot of the same things.

I sent Martha a PM letting her know about the answer in this thread. Now to see if she gets back to us or not.
The description of the book, sounds right, but I am not convinced. I will need to track down and copy to confirm.
Oh, guess I should've added in my description.I think they were doing grow lights to raise stuff in the basement. And trapping rabbits from outside (in the degraded environment). Hiding the bones and offal in the walls of their house so it wasn't detectable.
SOLVED - The Missing Persons League was the book. I used the MelCat system to get a copy of the book through my local library. Thank you for helping me figure out the title, so I could enjoy re-reading the story.
The son was farming in the "basement" which was hollowed out under the cement slab the house was build on. The dirt from the excavation was poured into the walls from the attic space. He raised chicken (from stolen eggs) and rabbits (trapped from the wild), and composted the scraps and leftovers to feed the garden.
Also, you can move this to the solved folder, by clicking the 'edit' link which is right after the subject line, and then selecting the correct folder (ie: not unsolved). Also, it helps if you put solved in the subject line, for when people do a search on it.
If not, no biggie one of the admins will eventually get around to it.
Thanks, I knew it needed moved, but missed noticing the (edit) link for the original posting, when I posted my solved message.
That is a good question! It is the Michigan eLibrary Catalog system. Kinda of like an online card catalog, that allows you to find a book at almost any public library in Michigan. My rural town library has a website, that I used look up the book on the MeLCat system. I have used the same library's district exchange to get a book I wanted from another library in the district (think: county), but this was the first time I tried the statewide system. Really enjoyed rereading the story. Thanks to those of you who helped me track down a title to the book.
The secret ring setting up to cold sleep to the future and rebuild in the title sounds like spoiler?

Thanks, I updated the header.

Just wanted to add a note thanking the OP and all the responders. For years I could not find this book. I read it at an early age and all I could remember about it was they dug out the basement and put the earth in the walls to raise food under the house, and that the father invented a set of golf clubs with mercury weights on the bottom of the clubs that shifted as you swung them. Thanks to everyone who participated I was able to find that long lost book. When you help the OP you are also helping countless other lurkers. Thank you all!Maybe my fact about the mercury weights in the golf clubs will help someone stumble upon this post. What a great book that especially holds up to this day with climate change that is happening around us. Eerily prescient. To think I read this in the 70s and we find ourselves nearing the same environmental crisis.
