SOLVED. Mexican mother searching for daughter guided by image of Mary [s]

I read a book by a Mexican woman author last summer. It was about a mother whose teenage daughter dies after a routine surgery and the mother cannot believe that she has died. Guided by an image of the Virgen (Virgin of Guadalupe) that she sees in the oven window, she sets out across Mexico to find her and, in the process, finds herself. Sound familiar to anyone?
