This sounds so familiar. I read a few books about latchkey kids (as I was one). I'll have to see if I can come up with something.
I think I may have solved this myself looking for something else! Possible A Pack of Liars by Anne Fine, but I don't have the book anymore to check...if any one has it please skim the first chapter or so to check? I'm currently abroad or I'd just nip to the library and check it out but I can't do that here, thank you! Thanks for your help!
Openlibrary.org has a copy to borrow. The first chapter deals with kids in a classroom having pen pals. The book is British.You may want to make an account there and see if it rings a bell.

Glad you found it. I definitely have not read that one, so I wouldn't have been able to find it. That came out when I was a Junior in high school, and I wouldn't have read it that late.
I read this book when I was much younger, I really can't remember what happened but it's been given away and now I really want to read it again but I can't remember what it's calked or who it's by! The cover was a bluey green with a girl with dark hair. I remember the beginning, she is going home from school, she has a friend that's a boy and a cat. She gets in from school before her parents are there, she has the key around her neck. Her dad gets in when it's dark, I remember the author describe the way headlights sweep across the walls through the window. I think she goes to a city looking for something/someone, I think I remember her writing letters on pink paper.
I know it sounds like the worst story ever... But I'm sure it was good in the end!
