Book: Secrets of a Summer Night
Rating:★★★★★
Finished:30/04/2014

I loved this book. Will continue with this series. Normally I don't read this type of book. I am not much on upper crust historical romance but this one sure surprised me. Four young ladies in search of a husband also known as the wallflowers make a pact. They promise to help each other find husbands and to tell each other everything. The girls plan scheme and plot their way into a proposal from a peer before the end of the season Really enjoyed the writing and flow of the story.

Karla Sorry about the delay! Goodreads wouldn't let me on until now. I kept getting an error message.

Week 2 - Landed on spot 14- read first book in series
Book: Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty
Rating: ***
Finished:May 2, 2014
Review:
There were a few times in the book that I didn't like Jess, the main character. She made comments about overweight people that bothered me. But, in the end, I did like the book. I plan on reading the rest of the series. After her best friend moves away, Jessica Darling struggles with life. She pretty much hates her "friends", feels her dad only care about her running on the school track teams, and doesn't get along with her Mom and older sister, Bethany.

message 73: by Karla (new)

Karla Week 3 - Landed on spot 23- read second book in series
Book: Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls by Ann M. Martin
Rating: ***
Finished:May 4, 2014
Review:
This book was told from Claudia's point of view. When the Babysitters begin getting hang-up phone calls, the girls believe it might be a local criminal, nickname the Phantom Caller. The book was fine. I'm not a fan of Claudia's, she's kind of mean to her sister, Janine, and Kristy and Mary Anne.

Karla Dalene wrote: "You all don't already have a captain?"

Elisha was our captain. Since she left, we have the spot open. If you, Dalene, or Sandy, don't want to be captain, I'm willing to step in. Only if neither of you want to be captain, though.

message 78: by Dalene (new)

Dalene (dalenekrodman) I have not been a captain before, if someone wouldn't mind guiding me on what I would need to do, I wouldn't mind stepping in. But I might need someone to stand in for me one week this month as we are going to be going out of town to pick up my oldest son and his family to bring them back home and will be gone for a week. I do know I can take my laptop and hook up at my moms while we are at her place. But I feel it would be better to be backed up just in case I cannot fulfill the duties that week. I believe we are leaving on the 20th and be back on the 27th.

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1202 comments Week 3 - Spot 23
Alternate: 2 stars
The Summoning (Darkest Powers, #1) by Kelley Armstrong
Finished: 5/6/14
Rating: ★★★

Chloe Saunders has just turned 15 and starts seeing ghosts. She's sent to a mental facility where a few other teenagers with seemingly supernatural powers are staying. The book focuses on Chloe learning more about her abilities and joining with the other teens to learn what happened to others like them who were supposedly murdered. I enjoyed the story and the writing never lagged. This is the first of a trilogy and I want to read the next book but I'm not in a hurry.

Rosina | 136 comments Week 3 - Landed on spot 23- read second book in series
Book: Betrayed
Rating: ★★★★
Finished: May 8, 2014
Review:
This is the second in the series about Zoey Redfield who is a fledging vampire with more powers than the norm. She is the new leader of the Daughters of Darkness. This is an interesting take on vampires. Different from the Twilight series. I quite enjoy this series, set in Oklahoma.

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1202 comments Good morning, Dalene. Please let me know if you are going to pass this week as a "newbie", or if you're going to review a book. All of our reviews need to be in today in order for us to roll. Otherwise, we lose a turn.
Thanks!

Dalene (dalenekrodman)

I am sorry I am late, I usually have my book read by Thursday night at the latest, but this week was a little hectic and I just finished my book..

Matched (Matched, #1) Matched by Ally Condie

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed the story, the plot is good. The characters are well developed. I like Cassia, Ky and Xander, they are all believable. The world building is pretty good. To have a society who chooses your match and everything else in your life would be boring to me to say the least. This book is a dystopian novel about what it would be like if everything was decided for you by data sorting and statistics. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

Good Grief by Lolly Winston

finished May 11/14
Rating: 2.5 ★

Review:
I feel that this book is unbalanced. GOOD GRIEF is an anomoly: a beautifully written book with a completely implausible plot. The begining starts off intriguing and is laced with black comedic moments. Then Sophie Stanton moves to Ashland and it becomes a different book entirely.
I got through the book very quickly, but I wasn't loving it. I was reading constantly waiting for something to happen. I felt for Sophie, I was sad for her, but I just couldn't get completely into it. It just didn't make sense. I thought that she moved on rather quickly for someone so depressed.
The boyfriend wasn't very likable and neither was the little sister. Her being able to start a business out of nowhere made very little sense as well. And the mother in law having Alzheimer's and that being made light of - her being able to take care of Marion while starting a business. This serious disease was reduced to a laugh track. Alzheimer's consumes families. It's a scary, exhausting disease, but Sophie handles it with ease, while effortlessly balancing a start up business--something else that consumes people--especially the first year.
My experience of having my mother pass away and the resulting depression I had and then moving in laws in with us so we could care for them, my MIL had Alzheimers and it was very stressful for my husband to deal with as well as run our business. I really find that this book was not realistic at least from my experience.
