My name is Zachary. I am from New Jersey. I love reading, writing, video games, etc. I happened upon this group randomly as I was looking for a good place to keep my 2017 books in check. I am planning on reading 64 books this years but i feel like that will change soon and become higher. I love reading all genres, but my all time favorite is epic fantasy. I just cannot get enough of it. Right now i am reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen series and love it. It's ten books long and still too short. Anyway, that's all I got and I'm happy to joing this group.
Cya

welcome to the group. I am also from NJ 64 books is a good start I started the year thinking 160 i'm at 209. there are tons of challenges to jump into so don't hesitate to join us

thank you! I will check it out!

Thank you, and I look forward to connecting!
Kyla :)

If you check back here, do you have a recommended "starting point" with those authors?

I am currently living in Brazil, that's where I am born too.
I am currently reading... all kind of books, since from history and self help, novels to fantastic reality.
I found you guys when I Just searched "2017 challenge group". ;)
My goal:
90+
Actually I already read a lot on internet, but I want to read more books. Especially now that I have a new brand kindle paperwhite and it is full of books.

Hi Cassandra,
Wonderful! Yes, I would recommend The Icarus Girl or What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours by Helen Oyeyemi, and for Amitav Ghosh I would recommend Sea of Poppies. Ghosh's work is more historical fiction rather than speculative but he writes diverse perspectives on colonial history with page turning plot lines and wonderful characters and prose.

I have used Goodreads to log my books read for a while now, but haven't joined in with any groups, challenges or discussions.
My reading goal for 2017 is 30, the same as this year. I have struggled to stay motivated to read consistently this year so I won't quite reach my goal. (I'm currently on 25 and reading very slowly).
I am hoping that by joining in with the discussions and challenges, it will help to motivate me throughout the year.

I was actually a part of this group a few years ago (back when there was like 300 members!) before life got crazy. Things are mellowing out and I've been able to participate in more reading challenges so I'm back!
I primarily read Young Adult, but have been enjoying more and more adult literature. The genres I lean towards are fantasy, historical fiction, mystery and contemporary.
For 2017 my goal is to read 120 books (way lower than normal) but am hoping to reach 144.

Welcome Tammy and Sarah - I hope you find the challenges help keep you motivated throughout the year. :)
Welcome back, Brianna! We're happy to have you.

Until last year I read mainly mysteries. However this year I did a reading challenge and read 53 books from many different genres.
I discovered that I liked some older and classics like A Room with A View by E.M. Forser, Dracula by Braun Stoker, Middledmarch by George Elliot, and The Prince and Pauper by Mark Twain.
I also liked recent books such as All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, The Twelfth Enchantment by David Liss, and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hussein.
I think I was most surprised to find I loved The Three Musketeers trilogy by Alexandre Dumas. I became wrappe up in the characters life and actually felt what they felt.
My daughter recently moved across the country. She also loves to read. In an attempt to stay in touch and make sure our conversations aren't just about work and her thinking I'm preying about her personal life I suggested we read the same book and then we can discuss it when we talk. Therefore I just finished Brooklyn by Colm Toibin.
I'm looking forward to the reading challenges and discussions.

Christina thats an awesome way to stay connected to your daughter! Walker is this your first kindle how do you like it?

I have been active on goodreads for a while, just wanted to become more part of the whole website instead of just keeping track of my own reading
I am Dutch, live in the Netherlands, but spent 10 years in NZ also also a year in the UK. I work 4 days a week and do a post grad course on the fifth day. As you can imagine a lot of my reading at present is in my coursework, but I still like to read to relax, mostly at bedtime
I love SF, the hard-core SF stuff (I am a bit of a nerd), but also some fantasy, thrillers and literature. I really love a book if it has some decent strong and smart women in it.
I found the group just by browsing and I love the idea of trying to put a number on my reading. But also to be given information on authors and books I have never heard of, that I would not consider otherwise.
My main thing is not that I don't read I simply have a hard time choosing the next book and on occasion am finding myself just picking up the same writer just because.....
Oh yes I am an avid user of ebooks!

I've been active on Goodreads for a while but came upon this group randomly. I'm part of two other reading groups on Goodreads as well, but I like how this group is focused on individual challenges in addition to the group reading.
My reading goal is to read about a book a week, which is pretty doable.
I'm looking forward to reading discussions with everyone!

that is a very commendable job! There are tons of challenges set up for 2017! we also have a challenge idea thread if you want to get creative and have some fun!

My name is Chrissa & I'm from Texas, not far from Houston. My reading list has lately grown into a crazy pile that is taking over my living space. Mostly, I'm a fantasy reader, but I'll read pretty much anything that catches my interest. Trying to both complete a series of nonfiction books on mall culture for a novel I'm working on and expand my reading (or, you know, finish things :) .
Looking forward to starting the 'official' reading in a few weeks & finding out what everyone else is reading!

H, welcome to the group Chrissa!
Fantasy - awesome. Don't know much about the genre.
Happy reading!

I'm from the U.S. I read almost anything, although my favorites are non-fiction (especially history) and YA. I'm not a real fan of romance, but I do love mysteries.
My reading goal for the upcoming year is to clean out some of the many, many books I've already bought but haven't read. (Buying books is an addiction I hope I never get over.)

Hi Lois, and welcome to the group.
Same here -- I've got a lot of books I've bought which I have to still get through.
Happy reading!

Welcome to all of you new members! We can't wait to see you all in our challenge threads!

I'm Charlie, 18 years old and I'm from The Netherlands. This group caught my eye when I was clicking around in the groups I already joined. It sounded super interesting to me, so I joined this one as well!
My favourite genres are probably contemporary, historical fiction and science-fiction. Quite an eclectic taste if I say so myself.
I just set myself a goal of reading 85 books in 2017. I managed to read over 160 books in the past year and I am incredibly proud and also still shocked with that amount. Before this year I never read more than 90 books a year, so I honestly don't know how this happened. I'm not going to set myself a goal over 100 books just yet. Let's see how the next year goes and maybe I will go with a goal of 100 books in 2018.
