This I don't recall, but it was a long time ago so maybe. After all, how many books can there be that feature swimming pools as impregnation devices?

THAT'S IT!! Oh my gosh, thank you so much -- you just made my day :D It must be the 1981 edition I read, since none of the covers look right and that one doesn't have a cover image. But as soon as I read her name "Mary McFarland" I knew this was it. Yay!!!

When I typed in "Barbara Wood Childsong," what came up was "Bitteres Geheimnis" and the image pictured at the top of this thread. I'm not sure why. Is that a non-English language version of the book? In any case, that's the book I shelved. Let me know if that's the wrong book.

I tried to fix this -- I think it's because one of the editions listed "Bitteres Geheimnis" as the original edition title, which it isn't. I'll take a look again.

That's the German language version - it came up because it's the most popular (most shelved) edition. (It translates as "Bitter Secret.")

Actually Kate (mod) had already shelved "Childsong" on 4/16. I deleted your shelving.
For me, when I do a book search before shelving, if it has already been shelved the book title shows as grayed out. Does it show as grayed out for you as well? It's possible this feature might not be available on the app, I don't know, just in case you are shelving from an app.

What threw me off with this one is that when I typed in "Barbara Wood Childsong," only this German edition came up. I didn't see the greyed out book.
In any case, Lobstergirl, thanks for following up on this and fixing my mistake.

FYI, I posted the problem with the German edition coming up to the GR Librarians list and their response is here. Hard to believe that the German edition is the most-frequently-shelved, but apparently so.

I seem to recall her family was Catholic. The book might have been written around the time scientists figured out that an electrical shock could induce an egg to start dividing, i.e. to trigger parthenogenesis. I read it at least 20 years ago but it may have been written well before that; I think the setting was the 1970s, maybe.
I think the girl's name is Mary -- symbolic, eh? I don't remember if she had a boyfriend or not, but I don't think so. I remember that she is as confused as everyone else about how this happened.
I don't remember it being a particularly Christian book -- that is, I don't think it had a Christian "message" or anything, though obviously religion is part of the theme.
