And also enjoying the subtly humorous undertone :)

Harshit Shah I've been following all the group polls since a long time but it's for the first time that I am literally reading the selected book in the poll. I've started reading it on my Kindle and so far so good. Let's hope the last novel for 2015 turns out to be a pleasant read. :-)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod

Yes, even I wondered the same! Anyway..it's just namesake..most of the people know it's really her!

And yes, Strike does seem like an unlikely hero, but an endearing one all the same! :D

I started Part 2 today.
Whatever has been revealed about Strike's troubled past and present so far, is only making me develop an affinity for him! (^.^)

Surendra Nath (surendra_nath) | 49 comments Cuckoo's Calling has the quintessence of Agatha Christie murder mysteries. (No, I am not playing spoilsport by letting out the plot. I'm just talking of a typical Agatha Christie plot.)
Such novels open with a murder. It might appear an accident or a suicide, and the case is closed. Someone is not convinced that it's an accident or suicide, he manages to reopen the investigation.
The motives are searched and with each motive a new suspect surfaces. One by one, the suspects are cleared. One person, say Mr. X, seems fully involved in the murder. But he does something highly creditable and wins the trust of the reader as well as the detective that he is above suspicion. Another person's, say Mr. Y's, actions are suspicious, even he could be hiding from the law. The detective corners Y, to find that he has a dark secret which he is trying to hide, but he has nothing to do with murder.
The plot now thickens, the motive is unclear and the reader is now suspecting every character. Then matter becomes more clear; it seems the killer is cornered. The detective and the police move in only to find that he too is killed.
While all this is happening, the killer, who is also helping in the investigation, is making several false moves, which are being noticed subtly by the detective. With inadequate proof, the detective can do nothing, but he lays a bait, and the killer bites it. He is nailed.
Finally the reader says, 'All the while I knew who had dunnit. I knew it was Mr. X, because he was the one ... blah, blah...

Madhu (Madhu LovesBooks) (madhu_lovesbooks) | 398 comments Now reached part 4...highly detailed characters and each of them has a murky past and the plot thickens as the characters develop...
Strike is unusual but good detective, nonetheless. And I happen to love Robin!

I suppose you've finished it already! I'm still on Part 3 -_-
I seem to be the discussion lagger, rather than leader :P
Nevertheless, I'm really enjoying the book! (^.^)

Madhu (Madhu LovesBooks) (madhu_lovesbooks) | 398 comments I liked this book. Bit slow in the beginning, but worth a read:)

Ashish Iyer (aashishiyer) | 7 comments felt draggy and too much conversation. overall it was okay type book but definitely going to read 2nd part.

Avisek Bandyopadhyay | 383 comments I have always wondered why authors go for physically challenged detectives. Be it Cormoran Strike, Lincoln Rhyme, somehow authors will attribute to them some super human power, some real brawny shit and what not. And these detectives will have the Police Department licking their feet. And then these 'detectives/ supermen' will also bed the hottest girl around.

This cliched element of "Life gave me lemons but I f**kicng made lemonade out of it" somehow turns me off entirely. What are your views on this ?

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod
Perhaps they want to play the sympathy card.
Or perhaps to make their detecting feats more impressive.

Shashank Shekhar (danielrecker) | 2 comments Hard, hard to even talk about it since I haven't even read ''Career Of Evil''
