A boy (12-15ish) and his drifter mom get pulled into a cult. The cult does not educate children and is very strict about all sorts of things (diet, habits, nicknames, etc.). The boy gets into very serious trouble when he's caught (with another girl he's befriended) teaching a young child to read on the sly. He escapes (with some difficulty) and contacts an ex of his mother's, who takes him away. His mother refuses to leave. Read sometime in the late 80's to early 90's.
