Jackie (wilssearch) Thanks Alissa.
I clicked on the book link only, do I need to click on book and then author to get both of them to post? I have to admit I am not usually on GoodReads that often so I am still learning how to do things here.

J

Kathy | 180 comments I am currently reading How to Mellify a Corpse by Vicki Leon. It is a quick read. A couple page synopsis of the history of ancient (Greek/Roman/etc.) beliefs and practices. Some interesting nuggets interspersed with lots of tedious filler. Don't recommend it.

once you get the hang of it becomes second nature, but let any of the moderators know if you need a hand. thanks!

message 1208: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Patrick.....here is another book you might want to read on somewhat the same subject.....the story of the German Army from Frederick the Great until the fall of the Third Reich. It covers both the common soldier and the military hierarchy. I thought it would be rather dry but it turned out to be truly fascinating.....and chilling.

message 1211: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Jill, I wasn't aware of this case/incident either. So far the book has been interesting with accounts like this explaining the start of forensic pathology in France in the early 1920’s while working on the serial killer case of Henri Landru:

“Dr. Paul had cracked the case when, replicating Landru’s technique of disposing of his victims, he burned body parts in a kitchen stove. ‘A right foot’, Paul learned, ‘disappears in fifty minutes, a half skull with brains taken out in thirty-six minutes, the whole skull in one hour ten minutes. A human head with the brain, hair, tongue, etc. disappears in about one hour forty minutes.’ The most difficult to dispose of were the trunk and thorax, possibly explaining why the murderer at rue Le Sueur chopped the bodies up before feeding them to the fire.”

Edward Lengel (edwardlengel) | 21 comments I'm reading A Galloper at Ypres and Some Subsequent Adventures by Patrick Richard Butler by Patrick Richard Butler. Originally published in 1920, it's a pleasant surprise so far. The author, who was a son of the famous military painter Lady Elizabeth Butler of "Scotland Forever" fame, served on the staff (as an aide de camp) of the British 7th Division. This division was formed at the beginning of World War I from the finest British regular regiments, and Butler witnessed first-hand its destruction at the First Battle of Ypres in October-November 1914, where he was badly wounded. Though written from the staff point of view, Butler's perspective is humane and likeable. Good read for WWI memoir buffs like myself.

Calof was unusual, for she was a women who left a nasty life as an orphan back in Russia for an arranged marriage in North Dakota to a man she'd never even met before. It was quite a gripping read.

message 1244: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Janie, if you click on the add book/author link above the comment box, then do a search for the book title. Select the book using the cover radio button at the bottom, then immediately go in and do the same thing for the author. You can always use the preview button to check that it will appear properly. There are instructions in the mechanics of the board thread, let us know if you need a hand. It's a snap once you do it once or twice. Thanks!

message 1245: by Janie (new)

Janie Thank you very much. Is this required for every group discussion? This is my first one. Please advise.

message 1246: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Janie.....above the comment box is a link that says "add book/author". Click on that link and type in the name of the book. When it appears,go to the bottom of that page and click on "photo", then click "add" beside the book name. That will put the book cover into your post. Then return to the "add book/author" link and click on author tab at the top of the box. That will bring up the name of the author of your book and follow the same process. Many authors have no picture available so only the link needs to be used.
I am terrible at instructions but hopefully that explains the process.

Kathy | 180 comments According to the book I am reading now, the author tried to insinuate the child could have belong to either Grover Cleveland or Cleveland's father in law, Oscar Folsom. But Cleveland, being such a stand-up guy took the blame, since Folsom had a family. Said with tongue in cheek!
