MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Who's watching the HBO series!??!

(Tytti ... :D )

I read the first book (again, back in the 90s, I think), but no more of the series. The books are huge. I remember liking, not loving the book. Too many names, I think was the issue, for me.

The series is awful (killing sex killing betrayal killing ... well, you get the idea)! And I'm completely addicted!! :p

Not for the squeamish or easily offended, tho, I do have to say :D

Tytti | 1010 comments Well I liked OZ when it came over 10 years ago so I GoT is nothing compared to that.

I haven't read the books (and won't) and I haven't watched the first and second seasons that carefully, either, so I am always asking my friend who's that guy and have I seen him/her earlier. The last season they showed as a marathon so I sort of kept up a bit better.

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments I think my husband and I watched the first season as a marathon, but then the second and third seasons, we watched as aired.

Third sesaon? Wait, which one just opened, third, or fourth?

message 4: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments This one is fourth.

Blu Tulips (blutulips) | 3 comments Addicted to the series. The books are on my TBR pile this summer.

Happy reading! :)

message 8: by Annina (new) - added it

Annina I watch tv-show. I tried to read the first book, but it's so huge that I run out of time cause I borrowed it from library. But I think that it would be easier to read books now, cause now I know most of the main characters..

I'm planning to read the books in some point. Maybe next Summer like some one planned here as well.

message 9: by Kim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kim (whatkimreads) I do! And I've also read the first 3 books already. I do want to finish the series, but since I have to read for school I don't really have time for it. But there's always summer. ;)

I love both the tv show and the books... I feel like the characters are all interesting people, each with his own story behind his actions and thoughts. I find it really difficult to choose between them. Apart from maybe Tyrion... Okay he's my favorite! I'm attracted to intelligence in real people, so I think it's only fair that I'm attracted towards him as well. Also, Peter Dinklage (the actor right) portrays him so well! Sometimes I forget he's not REALLY Tyrion. But I actually have that with the entire tv show.. It's so well made and even if it's about politics and stuff (which usually bores me), I'm still interested and I want to know! Also: the locations!!! I don't know who's in charge of choosing the locations but, whoever you are, you are awesome.

So yes I guess I'm a fan. :D

message 10: by MK (new) - rated it 5 stars

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Annina, I had the same trouble with all the characters in the book! yes, I bet it would be easier now.

Kim, wow, NO KIDDING. The location shots in this series are absolutely stunning. Particularly the Danaerys (sp??? lol) ones. And, Castle Black/over the wall ones too, sometimes.

Kelly B (kellybey) | 233 comments I haven't watched the show, but I've read all the books in the series so far and absolutely loved them. The first two books are the best, but I thought all of them good and worth reading. Lots of characters to keep track of (I like that though) and so many plot lines going on at once.

The books are full of death, murder, and mayhem so I'm not surprised to hear the show is the same way.

Abmis | 3 comments I absolutely love GOT, and that says a whole lot !

Especially because of the fact i only saw a few episodes of the show.
Liked it so much that i decided to first dive in the books without to many spoilers, so i'm still busy reading <3

Currently on a hold though, because they take so much commitment, and i wanna enjoy them to the fullest, when i have enough time !

But i've got a feeling, there is nothing like this and will never be anything like this.
For me then ! * can't speak for others*

I dont consider myself as someone who becomes a fan of things easily, i actually can't remember the last time.

But even without watching the show and without having read the whole series yet, i dare to claim that this is one of my favorite shows/series everythingies ever :)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Kelly, lol, yep, death murder and mayhem! yes, for sure. lol

Abmis, that's awesome! Yes, I would imagine they do take quite a commitment, the books. I've only read 1, and that was a loooong time ago. The books are huge, yes?

I didn't want to spoiler it, but holy .... a few story lines progressed, I thought!

message 17: by Ana (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ana Camarena (quemardespuesde) Hi! I read GoT after watching the first season (I really liked it and couldn't wait for the 2nd season to be released). Though I've read the five books published so far (and I can't wait for the sixth to be in the stores) I honestly think that, literally speaking, they're not much of a deal.

I believe that, even though the story is great and the books are definitely a page-turner, Martin's writing is really poor. I'm not saying they're bad (I honestly love them), but they could be a lot better in that sense.

However, the series are great in their discipline. Audiovisually speaking, the HBO production is amazing. They lack things, of course (as every book adaptation does), but they've been able to put images and sound to the books in a remarkable way.

I don't know if you'll agree with me! Last time I said this some crazy GoT fans almost killed me haha

message 18: by MK (new) - rated it 5 stars

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Ana ... lol !

It's been so long since I've read GoT #1 (I have a hardcover 1st edition on my shelves), that I wouldn't be able to remember what was left out, and what was done well :p.

I'm a fan of the HBO series, rather than the books, I suppose.

I do agree! The books are fun to read, but I also think it's because of the story and the characters in it, not because of any "good writing". It isn't awful, or else I would not have gone through books of 1000 pages!!, but it is nothing special.

Kelly B (kellybey) | 233 comments I don't think Martin's writing is *that* bad, although certainly he won't be nominated for any Pulitzer prizes;-). For me though, the plot and especially the characters are so great I am totally emeshed in the GOT world. I don't notice the writing so much:-)!

I've read another book by Martin called Fevre Dream, about vampires. I thought that book was pretty good too.

oops. true!

Feels like last week was when the season REALLY got started ;-)

message 24: by MK (new) - rated it 5 stars

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments I'm finding it VERY hard to 'invest' in ANY of the characters. If I do .... they're just going to have something very very bad happen to them, I know it! :p

message 25: by Feliks (last edited Apr 20, 2014 08:25PM) (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Not a classic. Far from it. Just the latest bandwagon passing by. Its embarrassing to even see a thread devoted to it, frankly.

Lot of people must be too timid to come out and call it the shyt it is. That's the kindest explanation I can surmise...

Philina | 1085 comments I do watch the show and have read all the books. Naturally, I prefer the books.
I'm not a fan of Fantasy in general and do not like the Lord of the Rings, but those books really got to me. They are wonderfully complex and full of grey characters. The fantastic elements are not in the foreground. To me it's like hightened magical realism. Those books give me something to think about and to speculate. E.g. what does the title of the series really mean? In which ways can you interpret "song" and to what thing(s) does "Ice and Fire" allude to? Since there is no "official" interpretation like for most of the classics, it encourages me to think more and reflect harder.

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments No worries on classic/not debate. This folder is simply for novels made into films (or series, in this case :) ).

Kim (whatkimreads) If you haven't read the third book, might wanna skip this comment!

(view spoiler)

Two more episodes left in the season, save them all to watch together, after finals :). That way, you end up with good grades on exams, and no waiting week to week for what happens next :D

Philina | 1085 comments I'll be watching this in a couple of hours, but I guess it will end like in the books which is sad...
It sucks even more now, because I love Pedro Pascal's portayal of Oberyn.

I was the last one in my family to read "A Game of Thrones." My mother and uncles would always argue about things in the book, and offer proof of why they thought this or that. I was curious, and decided to try the book out so I could join the conversation. I became hugely addicted, and read them all over a period of a couple months. I am SO impatient for the last two books to come out!

The tv show has been doing quite well in sticking to the book, mainly because George R.R. Martin is one of the driving forces behind the show. I do find, however, that there are slight differences. Nothing major like in the new Peter Jackson version of "The Hobbit" though!
