Caroline asked 'What are the best bits about being a writer'.
I'd say there were two sets of best bits.
The first involve readers and being published. It is wonderful to see my book in bookshops, or get emails from people who've enjoyed them. I'm excited when friends grow fond of my characters. And I love getting the odd four or five star rating on places like Goodreads!
The second involve the process of writing. I enjoy getting to know my own characters and hearing their stories. It's very satisfying to find exactly the right word, or to write a sentence I'm happy with. And I learn so much about myself and about the world through the practice of writing.
Maybe the trick to being a happy writer is to rely on the second set, and take the first set as 'gravy' when it comes.
I'd be interested in hearing your best bits of being whatever your job is too - add to this post!
