A book that's more than 600 pages

I was going to read Pretty Girls but just noticed that it is only over 600 in the large print edition. Normally it is around 394 Hardcover. Back to the drawing board for me.

I'm reading The Goldfinch for this. I actually started it and got a decent way through a few months ago. I really enjoyed it, but got pulled away. So I'll be picking up where I left off, which technically means I won't be reading 600 pages during the challenge. But I'm counting it!

I am reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I figured it was about time. Everyone keeps telling me how awesome it is and I'll be hooked into reading the series. I'm only about 120 pages in and so far, so good. :)

I'm actually struggling with this prompt now. I originally thought I wanted to read The Goldfinch, but I keep delaying starting it and I've kind of lost motivation. I wouldn't mind picking something else, but I'm having trouble finding something that interests me.

Also, this may be a dumb question but does the specific copy we read have to be over 600 pages? I've been looking at some lists to get ideas for other options, and I find that the books they list tend to vary from around 550 pages to actually over 600. I have The Forgotten Garden, which most lists of books over 600 pages mention, but my copy is only 540 pages.

I go by whatever Goodreads says for number of pages. And Goodreads says The Forgotten Garden is 648 pages. I say you are fine to read it. Your version must have tiny print. ;)

Just finished Fall of Giants. I highly recommend it! The length didn't bother me because the subject was so interesting. I ended up finishing it in four days.

Some might consider this cheating but I just finished WONDERSTRUCK by Brian Selznick. I love the format and enjoy the blending of visual and written art to tell a story.

I ADORE Brian Selznick and used The Marvels as my 600-page book. I was just going to recommend him to people intimidated by this prompt. I don't consider it cheating at all, since they aren't just pictures, the illustrations actually tell part of the stories. Some characters have their entire stories told that way. It's like books and movies finally found a way to breed.

If anyone is quietly thinking, "UGH 600 pages? Just no." or runs short of time... consider Selznick. Huge, thick, quick reads with a unique style.

I really, really struggled to find something for this prompt. I don't mind long books if they are compelling enough to actually warrant the length, but I was having trouble finding one that seemed like it would be. I chose Me Being Me Is Exactly as Insane as You Being You because it was recommended by my cousin, and I thought the idea of telling a story through lists seemed pretty unique.

I read A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, and I'm currently reading Swann's Way by Marcel Proust. If anyone is still looking to fill this category, I would recommend all 3 of these books (some versions are under 600 pages but they all have a version that is more).

I ended up reading Sometimes a Great Notion by Ken Kesey for this challenge as I was going to a wedding in Oregon and I wanted something Oregon-y to read. Even though this book is supposed to be a great American classic - and there is no doubt that Kesey is an incredibly gifted writer - I kind of could not stand this book. Besides being racist and sexist almost none of the characters were at all likeable. I enjoy books where characters are flawed and unlikeable but these characters weren't even unlikeable in an interesting way - just kind of stubborn, blind, and annoying.

I love long books! When I was a kid, my parents would take me and my little brother to the bookstore every other week when my mom got paid and bought us a book and I always picked the longest, thickest book I could find!
