20.4 GOLDEN OLDIES - Players may earn a ticket for each book FIRST published in or before 1950. A random ticket will be drawn from the ticket pool to determine who creates this task. Challenge finishers are not eligible for the drawing. Players must specifically request a ticket in the post by claiming "Golden Oldie" and stating the original publication year. I'm sorry, but a Golden Oldies ticket cannot be awarded for a book published in 2009, even if the individual items contained within the collection were published earlier. We go by the publication date of the book you read, not by the individual items within. The different book you cited to is not the same book - it's a different collection that appears to have actually been published before 1950, but it's not the same book you read and it's only 70 pages long, so would not work for SRC purposes.

To claim a Golden Oldies ticket, you must include the date of publication in your post. See the Posting Requirements.

If you repost to claim a GO ticket, be sure to indicate at the beginning of your post the reason for reposting, so that Dlmrose doesn't have to review the post for substance. Remember that reposts must be complete, including links.

I know it was, it was to show that the stories themselves were published around the time I mentioned and obviously not 2009. I thought the convention in Goodreads was to publish the date of the original works in the book itself and not the book date in the 'first published' slot so the publication details of the one I actually read was incorrect. They will be similar stories it is just a smaller anthology. As Charlotte Perkins Gilman euthanized herself in 1935 none of her writings are going to be later than that...

If you won't accept it though then that is that. Unless requesting a librarian to adjust the originally published date to the correct 1892 would satisfy?

message 126: by Sandy, Moderator Emeritus (new)

Sandy | 16893 comments Mod
I think that the date the book is published is the date the book, not the contents, were published - for instance, English Victorian Poetry: An Anthology is shown with the publication date of 1998, the date the book was published, even though obviously the poems within were written all prior to that date.

I looked at the librarians manual and briefly at the Goodreads Librarians Group, but didn't see anything suggesting that GR would assign a made-up publication date based on the contents of a book, rather than the date the book was published. Doesn't mean something isn't there, but I don't have time to hunt through all the posts in that group.

For SRC purposes, however, we go with the date a book is actually published, not with the dates that contents were first written.

If you are claiming a BB ticket, you must specifically claim one and include the number of pages in the specific book. A tally at the bottom of your post is not sufficient. Please see the Posting Requirements.

Nicola | 1360 comments Sandy wrote: "

I must be misunderstanding what you just said. For example with The Complete Stories and Poems or Frankenstein here you do not go by the date that your own book was published, but when the story (or stories) was (were). Which is why Goodreads has the definition of Published May 6th 2003 by Penguin Books (first published 1818) for Frankenstein and, if claiming a Golden Oldie ticket it is the 1818 date that is used and not the 2003 one . If you only accepted the publishing date of the book that we are physically holding in our hands then virtually no books we read would be older than a few years and getting Golden Oldie Tickets would be next to impossible.

I have asked a librarian to adjust the first published date because it's wrong; Charlotte Gilman did not write these stories 80 years after she died :-). And of course I don't expect you to go hunting through Goodreads to verify, that was why I published a link to a book that had the same sorts of stories as the one I posted and which had the correct date, so it wouldn't be difficult for you to check.

message 129: by Bea (new)

Bea As a librarian, I looked at the stories in The Yellow Wallpaper and Selected Writings and found that they ranged in publication year from 1890-1915. Given that much of a range, the first publication date will need to reflect the date the book itself was published or any copy of the book that had the exact same stories. As best as I can determine, that would be 2009.

Pia Hi!
Regarding Nicola's (M1nks) post, I checked in the GR Librarians Group, and they allowed me to change the original publication date for this edition.

It's 1915, as this is the year the last story/writing was published.

Thank you very much Pia. Hopefully that clears that up :-) It is rather confusing with collections as they have a range in dates. Using the last published work date seems a sensible way of working out which one to use.
