The Count of Monte Cristo will keep you occupied for HOURS and hours. I highly recommend it!
Either YA or adult would do. I just read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan not too long ago. It wasn't my favorite book of all time, but it was an engaging read. I liked it. Books that transport me to another place, time, or world are always good. I'm going to check out the Otori Series.Thanks, too, for the quick response and the understanding about J's job. It's well appreciated. :)

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - excellent YA
The Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris - her world is hard not to get swept up in.
anything written by Christopher Moore - hopefully you will Laugh Your A** off.

I'm reading it right now April, and I can barely do anything else!Amanda, I really hope your husband will find something soon. Books are the perfect thing for the "in the meantime" times.
For something funny - you might also consider the Douglas Adams series starting with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. If it's not YA, (and it's probably not), it would def. be a crossover. I read it in high school, and lots of others were too.
Laura,We have the five-books-in-one deal of Hitchhiker's Guide. I read through the middle of book three, but never finished. Maybe it's time to dig that old book out again...
J has been reading a lot more lately, too. His tastes are quite different than mine, which is why we have fun when our tastes overlap. We both highly enjoyed the Mysterious Benedict Society books, and are looking forward to the next; we also like the Artemis Fowl books (though not so much as the former series) and are working slowly through those.
This thread is making me smile today, and I've really needed that.

Mysterious Benedict Society - I've never heard of these. Which is the first? Or are they a collection, rather than a series?Hitchhikers is definitely a laugher! You might wanna go back to that.
the Anne of G Gables series is a really good one too. And quite long! But definitely good for a smile - Anne is so upbeat, that at first you kind of want to smack her, but once you get to know her, she becomes very charming and sweet.

The last will be out later this year, I think. They are great, quirky books about a group of gifted children who join a secret society in order to save the world. What I love is that I get to try to solve the puzzles before the characters. Also, Constance Contrair is one of the best characters ever written up. My husband and I will quote her at each other just to get a random laugh.

I have the first two of them. I didn't realize there was a third one coming out. I'll get around to the first two eventually, too.
Such great books! I laughed throughout, until I got emotional. J, being a little less inclined to get emotional, just laughed throughout. They were great books. We want to add them to our personal library, since we had to borrow both from the public library.Thanks again for the books to add to my lists.

We've been sharing a computer, since his crashed the day after he lost his job. We're up in South Bend, Indiana right now, where my brother is fixing J's computer. We go back tomorrow (Sunday), with a pretty much brand new computer at cost. It took a little bit of our savings, but a lot less than transferring the hard drive onto a new computer, which was our other option. Most of J's resumes, cover letters, and other information is on his hard drive.
Anyway, I haven't been around much because I've had such limited computer time. I've missed GoodReads, and this group in particular. I've even fallen behind on the 50 Books in a Year group, and I just had to post my reads there.
Does someone have a good book recommendation? Something to sweep me away and make me forget the bad news we've had lately?
