Alexandra | 1 comments I read this young adult book a few years back. I loved it, and was really wanting to read it once again. I can't remember the title or the author. The cover had a single, lit match on the front. The background was black. The book was about a boy who had been in a fire. He liked to build things out of matches and spend time with his best friend. At the end of the book, readers learn that the boy has some form of mental issue because his mom reminded him that his best friend died in the fire. I know this isn't much information, but it's all I can remember. I do know that I checked it out of my local library at the time. I now live hours away. This library was the Wabash Carnegie Public Library in Wabash, Indiana.

Daphne's suggestion of Invisible looks very promising.

One GR reviewer says, "[Dougie Hanson] is invisible to everyone in this story. He’s extremely close to his best friend, Andy, even though Andy’s a popular athlete. When they aren’t together, Dougie works on a very big model train he’s been building for almost three years. It's 11-foot-long bridge built of matchsticks is almost done. The bridge contains 22,400 matches in all. As he is almost done making it he mentions something about his life. His parents worry, his therapist asks if he’s taking his meds and a female schoolmate accuses him of stalking..."

Another request for this book mentions "his friend died at some point in a fire". https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I don't think the OP is coming back, but I think we can call this solved.
