“We make ourselves a place apart Behind light words that tease and flout, But oh, the agitated heart Till someone find us really out” (154). In middle school or just school in general, most people tend to find themselves in this place of trying to discover who they really are through trying on different masks. For example, people that are usually very shy try to put on a mask of confidence or a person who is usually very kind can put on a mask of a bully. There are many different kinds of masks, but they all serve the same purpose: they all are devices we use to cover up our true identities because we are insecure about who God made us to be. However, hiding our identities and investing in different masks is a very bad practice. In the process of trying to discover your identity by using the masks, you also lose your true self and become a faker by trying on personalities that do not fit into the mold God made for you to fill. We each have our own personalities and they are all unique: so why do we try so hard to change and or hide our wonderful unique personalities? Why can we not just accept everyone for the way they are? We want people to like us and accept us, but we go to so much trouble trying to change it that we end up hating who we become in the process.
