There's a third??? I thought desolation of smaug was the last ?

You should start with the Hobbit! It's much lighter and hearthly than Lord of the Rings, being a breeze to read and and amazing and very entertaining story, as most of the times, better than the movies too :)
Give it a go and tell me what you think!

usually most dragons talk :( at least in a sense, some actually have verbal speech, other talk through the mind or even some cases of body control, hardly you´ll see a dragon that doesn´t communicate.
they´re supposed to be one of the most ancient and powerfull races in most "worlds"

Technically you don't need to read it first because they are both standalone's but by reading the Hobbit first it definitely gives you a little more insight into LOTR.

I love the hobbit so much :-) I read it when I was ten, then watched the films when they came out then I read the lord of the rings and I'm halfway through the Silmarillion. They're hard to read but worth it, I'm 14 and managed the lord of the rings in 6 weeks so everyone should try to get through it and at least past Tom Bombadill

also noticed Legolas and Tauriel aren't in the book ;( and no TaurielxKili as well
Bilbo Baggins ..enough said :D
